New Year's Eve in funchal

We will be in madeira for nye this year, staying at reids. We are looking for a place to have dinner, drinks, then watch fireworks. I know they offer this at reids, but I'm wondering if it might be a bit older crowd. We are early 30s, getting a vacation without the kids (!!!) and enjoy food and wine. We were hoping for good food, fun, lively but not crowded or "clubby". I have seen on here the casino does a dinner, fireworks etc. I also saw restaurante do forte and the vine hotel offer this. Does anyone have any advice on if these would be good options for us? Or any other suggestions? We are willing to splurge, as it is our ten year anniversary trip, if we need to do so. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I haven't stayed at Reids but often pop in for drinks or cocktails, and there is no better location in Funchal than Reids terrace for that, in my opinion. There appears to be a cross section of hotel guests there of various nationalities and across the age range but the atmosphere is oh so reverential in the hotel, especially the restaurants which are oases of calm and tranquility which may not be to everyone's taste.

However I think NYE will be different as non-resident guests will be joining in for the dinner and firework display, and there should be a real party atmosphere. Reids is such a fabulous location for NYE I would stick with what's on offer there as you're staying there anyway, and it will be truly a night to remember. It's not cheap for NYE, but then nor is anywhere with a good view that night, and it will be pretty exclusive, so make the most of it.

My vote also goes to Reid's or Vila Cipriani, next door. Where ever you go, it will be crowded and along the Marina area will be very busy, especially with the current works there. It will be a fantastic place to view, one of the best because you will see the whole ampitheatre of fireworks, they are not just around the Marina, but also along the Rapida and in a semi-circle. There will be a great atmosphere. If you go into the city, it will take a while to get back by taxi or even bus as the 'world and it's mother' will be doing the same. I would definitely stay where you are.

NYE at Reids' !! You're SOOOO lucky !!! Fabulous hotel. I once was a night in room 358, the best room of my life ("superior", I think) and right by the gardens (direct access).

For the fireworks see www.flickr.com/photos/reidspalace/4422603742 .

Great view but not the closest one. If you have time, I would check out at The Vine if it will be better for you to walk there (not very long walk).

I just saw in my review (2009) that I had room 538 that has direct access to the gardens. All black-marble bathroom (not everybody's liking).

The public washrooms in what was the Classic Savoy had black wash basins. Whilst I thought they were quite tasteful they were probably not to everyone's liking as dutchguy says about the bathrooms in Reids.

I don't think all bathrooms in Reid's are like that, may be just my room 538, but I loved it still.

Good was that it has a ante-chamber (door between entrance hall and room), something all good hotels should have so as to avoid noise from the corridors.

I had flowers, fruitbasket and a hand-written welcome card by the manager. Am curious if they still do that

The minibar is for fee.

dutchguy I have stayed once at Reids and you do certainly get well looked after.

Single supplement is very steep - the 'core' cost over again on some dates.
