Roundtrip Madeira?

Hi,

We are planning to go to Madeira by the middle of january. We have 11 days of vacation. We want to rent a car and explore the island either by car or hiking. I have a question concerning the accomodation. What is your opinion? Is it better to do a round trip with different hotels or would you prefer to book just one hotel suitable for day trips?

Thank you!

Absolutely no n eed to change hotels. You can easily reach anywhere on the island by day trip in a car. The roads have improved hugely in the past 20 years so its easy and fast to get around.

There's no need for more than one centre in that you can get anywhere from Funchal in 60-90 minutes. But if you are a keen hill walker staying a night or two in somewhere in the hills like the Pousada dos Vinhaticos so you can have a longer day walking and are able to set out at daybreak when the views are often clearest. If you want to do that it might be better to book late so you can bear the weather forecast in mind to lessen the chance of the hills being smothered in cloud. Or you may just want the contrast of some time based in Funchal and some time in a rural or village setting.

I just stayed in Santo da Serra. made an all day car tour with others and we drove all the way to Porto Moniz and back via Paul da Serra. ONE base is enough but a great hotel for walks in the west is www.hotelpicodaurze.com , which stay would allow an early start if it is not foggy.

Hi Dutchguy

The website for the hotel is very out of date , and not bringing up any prices, how did you book a room?

Tobi, did you mean Pico da Urze? I did not stay there now, but it is bookable at various booking sites, like www.booking.com
