ponta delgada

Hi, just wondering what the best and/or cheapest way to get about the island is from ponta Delgada and also whether there are any recommendations for must do sights or restaurants in the area.

Thoughts at the moment are dinner at taberna sao vincente, levada walk (16) and the volcano caves. Is sao vincente walking distance?

Also considering the lava caves at porto moriz so would be useful to get there and a day in funchal to look around and do tobaganing but it looks like the bus takes 3 hours?

Any tips are much appreciated.

Thanks

I've stayed at the Monte Mar hotel in Ponta Delgado and it is very good. It's as good as most hotels in the hotel zone. Yes you can walk to São Vicente; depending on your speed/weather etc it will take between 45-60 minutes. There is a local bus as an alternative.

I haven't been there for a few years, but I recall that the bus leaves for Funchal around 0715. Yes it does take several hours to get to Funchal because it is primarily for the locals, not the tourists, and will stop at every village and hamlet on the way. Ditto the return journey! Porto Moniz is well worth a visit and can be made by bus - change buses at São Vicente. Your hotel will give you bus times.

There are plenty of good walks in the area, and again your hotel will advise. If you do go out walking without a guide, make sure you don't walk alone and tell the hotel where you are going beforehand.

Sorry can't help with specific restaurants; we went half board in the Monte Mar and the food was superb.

It's 7 km to Sao Vicente, so will take a bit more than an hour's walk

Bus is www.rodoeste.pt , bus 6 to Sao Vicente (and Funchal).

Best sight in Ponta Delgada is the magnificent church, one of the most beautiful in the island.
