First Time to Maderia

Hello

Myself and my fiance are going to Maderia in July for a week. As it is our first time, we need sugguestions on what to do, where is the best places to eat... bus timetables etc. day trips, water parks.

We are staying the Four Views Monumental Lido Hotel about 3km outside Funchal. What is there to do in Funchal.

Any sugguestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Emer26.

the Fourviews monumental used to be called the Monumental lido and you will find lots of reviews on this site under that name. It is worth the extra for a sea view if you are in one of the hotel rooms and not a studio.

There are lots of places to eat near the hotel or in the old town. Look at the restaurant reviews here.

There are 3 main day trips East of the Island, West of the island and the nuns valley trip. The first 2 are full day and the nuns valley trip is a half day. The easiest place to book them is in the Strawberry World office right next to you hotel. There are lots of little kiosks a advertising the same trips for cheaper but usually they invove a timeshare visit Strawberry world is not timeshare.

There is 1 waterpark close to the airport in Santa Cruz. You will see it on the left just after you leave the airport. There are also different boat trips to go looking for whales and dolphins and in summer they stop so that you can swim in the sea.

PS

It is an easy stroll into town downhill or if you get a Giro ticket from Joes( dont worry anyone will tell you where his shop is) it is 85 cents on the bus from the stop across the road. Coming back the stop is just outside the hotel.

As mentioned there is plenty of kiosks all around offering tours, boat trips, walks, sightseeing etc. and altough most are connected to a timeshare presentation they also do have good offers without any of that. You should have a good look around and compare prices.

Next to the hotel is a small shopping center called Monumental Lido. Inside there you will find an official tourism info center where you can get a bus timetable for all the different buses that run across the island.

Hi Emer

There are some great restaurants in the area around your hotel.

Would strongly recommend Tokos...............book in advance............the highlight of our trip in April!!! It has it's own website so you can read up in advance.

However avoid Casa Madeiriense. It is a tourist trap to put mildly............charged €14 for a french coffee made with Grand Marinier and €7.00 for bread!!!!
