Just back from my first trip, lovely place

Hi, just wanted to say thanks to all the people who answered my questions before my trip to Madeira, just back last night ( boohoo ) and had a lovely time .

Flowercity your help was most valuable and appreciated, particularly the aerobus info.

This is a lovely island and has the best of both with the Oceanic life and the forest and levadas.

I went swimming with Dolphins with Rota dos cetaceos which in truth was the highlight, a fabulous company with conservation high on their agenda, definately recommended. The gardens and levadas lovely and Funchal was more cosmopolitan than I expected.

I'd definately return. And the bus drivers are more skilled than Formula one drivers, an exhillerating experience !

Thanks to you all

Seems it was good fun.

What sort of prices are for meals in Funchal, taxis, beers etc, more costly than UK or similar prices.

How was the weather??? Im travelling with my 2 kids below the age of 12ys old in two weeks time.

Weather was hot 22 -26°c which is hot for me, pack sunscreen.

I felt eating out was a bit pricy, depending on where you went I guess. The closer to he Marina the more expensive, beer anything from 2.50 - 4.00 in restaurants, sit down sandwiches around 5 - 6 euro, we found that we spent 25 -30 euro a head with drinks in the evening. But we didn't look for specific kids deals as we don't have any, I'm sure some of the restaurants have deals for kids. Again in supermarket bottles of water 15 -20p in the marina the same bottle 1.30p , 1.50 - 2.50p for cokes again depending on location. The catamaran trip charged 2.50 for a can of coke.

The best option we found was in Funchal centre, just behind the Marina shopping centre was a pastelaria called Opan, it did freshly made mini pizzas for 2euro and a range of take away sandwiches and cakes, we got lunch and sat in the little park a few meters down or crossed over to Catarina park.

Try out the local pasterlarias , I suspect they all do something similar re take outs and are much cheaper than the restaurants.

There's also a supermarket on the ground floor of the Marina shopping centre if you want drinks or fruit.

I didn't get a taxi as the buses go everywhere, you can buy a week long Giro ticket for 3.50 and get as many buses as you want, they tend to be hourly to the main attractions and they are also on time so be sure to check the schedule in the bus stop so you don't get stranded with two kids for ages. They are worth checking out for the sheer skills of the driver on the smaller roads, it will feel like a rollercoaster ride for the kids ! If you are getting a taxi barter and agree price before you get in.

Hope this helps , have fun

Sorry should have said, the 25 -30 a head meal was for main dish, half bottle of house wine, 2-3 beers and occasionally a dessert, not a 3 course meal with drinks. Where are you staying , maybe the hotel has meal deals on.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

I am staying at the CS Maderia Atlanctic resort & spa, just found out they do HB as an free upgrade. Hope is a good hotel???

So most of the time will be spent in the pool as kids love it, but will venture out to Funchal etc to see the main attraction atleast.

So eating out in Daytime would be the only time.

Will try the bus as recommended.

thanks

Desiboy I stayed at the C.S. Madeira 3 years ago at this time of year and had a wonderful time. The hotel was quiet and very clean and the rooms fantastic and that view!!!!!!!

We shall be back out in 3 weeks time but staying at the Cliff Bay this time.

HI your hotel is near a bus stop at the bank of espirto santo just up from your hotel beside one of the cliff bay entrances a good bus service however i think the price quoted for a weekly pass is wrong nearer 15 euros last time i had one and that was sometime ago.The bus prices in funchal are cheap and in madeira generally i usually refill my giro at a local shop or city bus office on the sea front a trip costs about 1 euro ten cents there are passes you can check at your hotel or bus office have a nice time.

The 3.50 quoted for a weekly bus pass seems absurdly low and, as Bob says above, must be wrong.

But Bob then says each trip on a normal Giro card costs 1.10 Euro. That is also surely wrong. When we were there two weeks ago, I got two Giro cards each with 10 trips on for 10 Euros per card, meaning each trip costs just 1 Euro - that was at Joe's Bottle Store. The receipt that came with each pre-loaded card said 10.50 Euros but I think he only charged 10 Euros because we handed in and he kept our two expired Giro cards.

Sorry, I saw it advertised on the side of the Giro office on the main street facing the marina but further towards the bus terminal area, but I could have misread it, hope I didn't mislead you if did misread it Desiboy, not my intention.

Have a great time.

Flowercity - Although we have been regular (once or on occasions twice annually) visitors to Madeira since 1997 we have never actually used any of the public buses! We've always preferred to take a slow, meandering walk to and fro, or on occasions get a taxi. However, due to our advancing years since our very first visit to Madeira, and the thought of tackling 'heart attack hill' for the return leg back to the Pestana Casino Park for 7-days in September and 7 days again at Christmas I'm very much warming to the idea that the public bus can now start to take the strain! Flowercity, thanks for the information regarding the Giro Cards, but:

1. Was the €12.50 day ticket for 3-days or 5 days?

2. Where can I buy them, and do I just ask for a Giro card (1, 3 or 7day)?

3. Does a Giro Card entitle you to go anywhere, or is it just for the immediate Funchal area?

4. If I buy say a 3-day ticket Giro Card on Monday can I use it on any 3-days in the week or does it expire 3 days after purchase i.e Wednesday?

5. Are the 1, 3 or 7 day Giro Card 'per person' i.e. cannot be shared?

Roger mentioned a Giro Card with 10 trips on it for 10 Euros?

My kind regards
