Excursions from Canico

We will be staying at Riu Palace in October. Just wondering if there are excursions we can book locally or would we need to book through our holiday rep?

You can book through your holiday rep - if you are with Thomsons the rep is at the hotel most days. However there is also a local travel agent in the parade of shops a few minutes walk along the prom from the hotel - sorry I can't remember their name but I have always found them reliable and cheaper than Thomsons.

You don't just deprnd on what's on offer there but can also book online at various Tour companies. They all do pick-ups in Canico and all know your hotel.

A great one is www.madeirahappytours.com , and www.madeira-levada-walks.com is best for walks.

Madeira has lots of such companies. like www.lido-tours.com , www.mb-tours.com and whatever you'll find by googling

Another one, particularly recommended a lot by local expert Flowercity, is www.madeira-seekers.com

You can also explore on your own by getting the free hotel shuttle into Funchal (does not run Sundays) and using the local buses.

Further to the previous reply: you find info about the local buses at www.tjwalking-madeira.com/busguide.htm and you can read through www.madeira-web.com to see what there is to do on the island

just for the record, some trips include pick-up but from Caniço there may be a charge especially for the West tour as the bus is going West, so travel to the East for pick-up means extra travel. Most company's only offer free pick-up in the Funchal area, so be sure to ask first.

Also a word of warning, as you may know Strawberyy World (trips etc) in Madeira, is facing serious financial problems but the website for Lido Tours reads as if it is SW operating under a new name. I was told the Lido Tours was a buy out from SW, but I would have thought that the website would have been written as a new company NOT one which has been 'trading 16 years as one of Madeira's leading Island Tour operator', just take care.

Enjoy Madeira, it is a beautiful Island with much to offer.

Thank you all for the great advice. It's our first time to Madeira. Only booked this week and travel in 5 weeks, so frantically trying to do some research.

Hello Karen G

We always stay in the hotel next door, Four Vviews Oasis.

Canico de Baxio is a much quieter area which is why we love it.

The hotel will have a folder full of information on the various tours, we have never had to pay a suppliment to be picked up from our hotel. The hotel will ring the tour companies and sort out all the details for you, it is generally much cheaper than the tours with the reps, we have done both and found this to be true. You can also hire a taxi for a day/half day and the driver will take you to the area you wish. We have done this also and found the driver to be very informative, and the taxi can get to places the bus cannot.

You can also take the local bus service, which stops just outside the hotel. It is very cheap and you see so much from the bus!! We regularly take the bus up to Canico village and get a taxi back down if we feel in the mood. We tried to walk once but the steep hills are a killer!!!

It is also true that there is a tour booking office a 10 minute walk from the hotel, going along the promenade and up the road to the shops and the tourist area of reis magos. Up that road is a fantastic little restaurant, le buffet, run by a german/portuguese couple called Robert and Kathy. The food is to die for and the prices are very competetive. We often go up there at lunch time and sit outside reading, drinking and eating, and come back down the hill in time to fall into bed!!!

Have fun
