We are staying in Funchal on New Year's Eve, can anyone suggest the best spot to watch the firework display? We are staying near the casino

If your are staying at the Casino I think the Casino allow guests upto the top to watch, if so it is great place, overlooking the harbour. If not, you can go down to the harbour/marina and grab yourself a spot or if your accommodation overlooks the harbour you will have an excellent view. You can also go on a boat or catamaran and watch from the sea, which is great as you get to see the ones light up from along the rapida and outlining villages. The atmosphere in Funchal is great and you will enjoy it immensly. Sometimes the Yacht Bar along Avenido be Mar open up the top of their bar to people where again you will have a good view, you won't know which direction to look in!!

Flowercity,

When were you last on Avenida de Mar? The Yacht Bar has disappeared because of the works on the Jardim cruise berth.

Doubt if you will see much from the Golden Residence, too far away. You will need to go into Funchal but be prepared for a long wait possibly to return as it will be difficult to get taxis. Buses usually run until just after midnight but best thing may be to pre book a taxi. Best to check with your reception for a bus timetable. You will be able to get a drink in the many bars open late while you wait for transport.

UKlexH no havn't been in Funchal for a couple of weeks. last time I was there that end of A de Mar hadn't changed, it is possible that it may reappear by then but I guess doubtfull. I suppose also that the works will make viewing difficult from that end, depends how much progress is made. Thanks for pointing that out - I can't be everywhere all the time !!!

If i was fortunate enough to go out to Madeira for the New year i would watch the fireworks from a very high advantage point. If you watch last years fireworks display on youtube they were taken from somewhere near the hotel Panaramic. You can see the fireworks being let off at the marina & all over the city. They lasted about 10 mins for the main display.I think this is were Chavesdouro watches the display from with his family.

I agree with Mr. Rob Morton and it is the best place from Rua dos Estados Unidos da Americathat pass just in front of Hotel Panoramico .

I always go there year after year and I am not thinking to change.

It is convenient that you arrive there before 10:30 PM to get a good place.

From there you can see all the town amphiteatre and all the cruise ships just in front.

From the Porto Mare Hotel , they transport you to the football stadium .Is that a good position for viewing the fireworks ?

The best place is without doubt what has been said if you want an overview, Panaramico hotel and along the way from the football ground upwards. Only problem is getting back into Funchal as there will be very few taxis - all of them being in the city. It is possible to walk but few paths from Panaramico down. Not sure that the footty ground is opened but there are a few parking places around it which would be good. You get a similar view from the sea but a differant perspective and it is possible to see all around the Island where there are fireworks. Whereever you go there is bound to be a fab atmosphere to enjoy.

Stayed last New Year at Casino Park and I believe the Casino allowed people on top to watch as Flowercity said. This overlooks harbour so view is great.

We actually walked down and watched from the harbour area and you are right in the 'thick' of things there.

Mike, I understand the view from the stadium is also excellent.

Sorry to hear about Yacht Bar. Just hope all this construction work is, at the end of the day, worth all the inconvenience.
