Best option for 7 hours in Funchal?

Hi all,

We have about 7 hours in Funchal as part of a cruise stop. We are looking at the ship excursions and wondering what is the 'best' thing to do for people to take in Funchal.

I'm sure some activities are boring tours and others are pretty good in terms of seeing the best of Funchal. The optons are:

1.) Tour through the sugar cane fields to Pico dos Barcelos. Then onto Monte and it's church.

2.) Terrerio de Luta, pico de Areeio. Trout farm visit in Ribeiro Frio, up to Fajal and finally to Machico and Portela.

3.) Eiro do Serrado, town of Monte, cable car down, shopping and Wine tasting.

4.) Pico da Torre, Cabo Girao, Riberia Brava, ends in Funchal

5.) Monte, cable car, botanical gardens,

6.) one of the above, just wander round Funchal

Thanks

If you want to see some of the Island I would first check out the cost of buying a trip locally as I understand the cost is much higher on the cruise. Many of the things you list, you can do yourself, eg Cable car, Monte, botanical gardens,Tropical gardens, shopping and wine tasting at you leisure, with some organisation as to the order you do them in. Take the cable car to Monte and Tropical gardens, take a second cable car to botanical gardens, then bus back to Funchal. Shopping and wine tasting are central in Funchal. An open top bus can take you to Pico de Barçelos and also to fishing village Camara do Lobos. You can hire a taxi for the duration you wish, who will tailor the day to your needs, about €100 (per car Not per person)

Thanks for the info.

About the shopping, do you know if Funchal is cheaper than Tenerife and Malaga for clothing, trainers, etc?

Deciding where to do the bulk of the shopping!

Thanks

I find clothes here quite expensive, but there is a C & A in the Forum shopping centre, and lots of Zara shops- Loads of shops selling trainers with prices to suit all pockets, also a few Chinese shops who have cheaper clothes ands shoes, but some of the stock is really tacky. Don't know how the prices really compare with Tenerife and Malage - perhaps someone else may know.

Of these options number 2 is by far the best.

But as Flowercity said, with more people it's best to rent a taxi to have you taken around the island for about 100 Euro, and don't stay just in Funchal. 7 hours is enough to see the best of a part of the island (east or west). For example with www.madeirataxis.com or www.taximadeira.com
