What is the condition of the Levada walks ?

We are going to Funchal for a week on Monday and plan to do some of the Levada walks.

We have 2 good books of walks and intend to try to use public transport as much as possible to get to the start of the walks.

I am not good in muddy and slippy conditions and don't want to end up falling!

I would be very grateful for any advice on the suitability of the walks at the moment.

Thank you

Odette

Conditions on each levada will vary and one that starts out as an easy walk may well deteriorate further along, best thing to do is to turn back if you come across a particularly wet area or a rock fall. I'm glad you have a book as some walks go under waterfalls or through tunnels and as the weather is unpredictable at this time of year it is wise to choose your walk carefully, also I'm not certain how many are accessible by public transport, presumably your books can advise on that.

Levada walking is a great experience though and I'm sure you will enjoy yourself.

2. Re: What is the condition of the Levada walks ?

There were some walks closed for maintenance in November (link - https://www.facebook.com/photo ) There has not been too much rain since then but I have not seen any info re closures ( may be someone else has up to date facts) If you have not done levada walks before in Madeira, despite having books, I would recommend doing at least your first walk guided, who will then also help with suitable walks to do alone. I am aware that many people do not like to be in groups but it is easy to get lost on some walks ( someone was lost for 3 days recently) and many are precipitous and narrow and remote. Yes it is a fab way to see the rural areas but be aware of the dangers and use sensible precautians eg. mobile phone loaded with emergency number, let your hotel where you plane to go, warm clothing, torch (some have tunnels to go through). Also be careful is using public transpoort with time as if you miss your bus you can have difficulty getting back to your hotel, as many rural buses are infrequent. Having said all that, hope you enjoy Madeira and have a great time, beautiful Island, stunning views and great people, super food.

Thank you Flowercity and Madeirapaul for the valuable information and the link to visitmadeira.

As this our first visit to Madeira we will have lots of other things to see and do if the walks are wet and slippy.

We can't wait for our holiday to begin andI hope our flight from Manchester isn't cancelled because of the snow!

Thanks again

My husband and I are frequent visitors to Madeira and have been out walking by ourselves and used the buses but last October were not sure of the conditions after bad rain etc. We booked a guided walk through our hotel, we were picked up by mini bus and had a wonderful 2 hour lavada walk. It was worth the money. Whatever level of walker you are I would definitely recommend a guided walk.

Pat520

great advice. There are many excellent guided walk companies who for a reasonable fee include often a walk in the morning, a lunch and a walk in the afternoon ..both walks with experts ...transportation to the walks by mini bus and may even collect travellers from their accommodation and return them!
