Hi. We are spending two weeks in Funchal September and have heard that there is quite a lot of cloud builds up in the afternoons. Has anyone been in September and can they please advise if this is the case.

It's not particularly in September that this occurs. Guaranteed sunshine does not exist on Madeira but in general clouds do form in the afternoon on Madeira. Always good to plan walks in the mornings. I wouldn't worry too much though. If you want statistics, search at www.wunderground.com for Funchal, the history (towards bottom) and then select "monthly" to see what the weather was in any year in any month.

There have been numerous threads about weather in Madeira and all tell the same, it is unpredictable and can and often is, different from year to year. Even if there is cloud in Funchal you can chase the sun and find sunny places close by. Temps should still be upper 17 - 19's and even with cloud should be warm. Evenings may start to get cooler and obviosly higher places on tours and walks, can be cooler so light jacket or cardigan will be useful. You should be able still to sunbath by pools , the sea may be cool for swimming but locals swim all year round - very much depends on your tolerance. Don't worry about - after all you can't change it so just enjoy the Island and all it offers.

Weather in September as Flowercity and Mike says can vary from year to year.Have been in September weather generally good but it can vary. Have been to Madeira so far twice this year in January and June.Weather in June okay a lot of cloud in Funchal but on trips to other parts of island sunny. In January sunny and warm all most all of the time but what ever the weather i am sure you will love Madeira.
