1st time to Funchal

My fiance and I are holidaying in Funchal at the Pestana Casino Park in June. We are both 29. Ordinarily, this would not be a destination I would choose, however, I won this holiday.

Having looked around the internet and on tripadvisor, it seems to be a fairly quiet island with no heavy nightlife, which I dont mind as such. Although, I would like to know if there is anything decent and entertaining for us. Also, dress code. For me its not a prob but my fiance is not a trouser on holiday person and it seems eating out in the evening requires trousers. Could you suggest something for him besides tailored shorts and linen pants.

Thank you :)

Smart casual dress( including long trousers) is required by most restaurants in evenings. I personally would not wear trainers in the evening as I think these would be frowned upon.

Would that rule out smart jeans?

Sorry to disagree with Laptop's response, but generally Madeirans do not tend tend to dress up when they go to restaurants. Perhaps he is referring to hotel restaurants where there is a dress code, but in restaurants anything goes, really, particularly in the summer. Many people wear shorts, trainers, flip flops to eat out, I've often see people in smart shorts even in Cipriani. But if you want to dress up you can, and you won't feel uncomfortable or out of place, either.

In June you can enjoy the firework displays on Saturdays for The Atlantic Festival. There are night clubs in Funchal, and several bars have live music. The summer months tend to attract a wider age range than the winter, when a high percentage of visitors tend to be more mature, but Funchal has a university and there are plenty of younger people around with accompanying nightlife. The Barreirinha Bar Cafe usually has music at weekends, Venda Socio at Complexo Balnear Barreirinha has music till the early hours at weekends, and Amazonia is pretty lively, too. There's plenty going on in Funchal for relaxed people like yourselves, just avoid the hotel entertainment - I'm sure love Madeira, particularly as you're on a freebie!

Zoe E - How lucky are you ! A free trip to this lovely island of Madeira .

Much of the hotel entertainment may not be to your liking but there are many bars with live entertainment and nightclubs by the port .

During the day , apart from swimming and relaxing on a sunlounger at your hotel ,there are boat and catamaran trips to see whales and dolphins as well as minibus or 4x4 Jeep trips around the island .

You will not be disappointed .

Sorry if I have misled OP but for the record I would not go for dinner in the evening attired in shorts, flip flops or trainers. This is not in keeping with the Madeira I first knew.

It's been raining today and tonight and I went for dinner wearing wellies as I didn't want to ruin my shoes - no-one batted an eyelid. In the summer it would be the same, wear what the weather dictates.

Have to agree with Roseandvine, in all but the poshest restaurants smart casual is the norm. In the summer my husband doesn't even bring 'proper' shoes.
