Only two golden beaches in Madeira - Calheta and Machico. Both are towns but away from the City centre. May be that if you are looking for a beach holiday Porto Santo may be better for you, Pestana Porto Santo or Columbus Hotel ate good there

Maybe the Calheta Beach Hotel? - quite good, reasonably priced and right on the beach. Calheta does't really have much of a "town centre" as such.

Hotel Porto Santa Maria in Funchal's Old Town has a pool with sunbathing facilities, it is next to a tiny beach with sea access and, when the seafront works are completed - soon, I think - there will also be 2 new beaches with sea access right in front of it. However the city beaches are all dark stones, no golden sand I'm afraid, in fact no sand at all but fine if you want to swim rather than lay on soft sand or make sand castles.

The hotel has all the bars, cafes and restaurants of The Old Town right on its doorstep, so plenty to do in the evenings, and there is nightly entertainment in the hotel also, but fairly low key. It's about 3 minutes' walk to the city centre so is ideally placed fo that, too.

If it's natural golden sandy beaches you're after I would try another island, but it would be a shame to miss out on Madeira as it's so beautiful and there's so much to do.
