shopping in funchal, help needed !

hi,we have booked a apartment for a month in lido complex area, later this year. asking help on the place to shop for food stuff, wine ,beers toileties, is there any-where,other than the local spar shops that could work out a lillte pricey. Any info on where the locals shop to stock up on items would be helpful.will be taking a few items from home ,but due to weight in cases will have to keep to a min. many thanks, all info welcome.

Hi in the Lido area there are 2 Prego Duce supermarkets like say Asda etc in the UK.One is in the Eden Mare Shopping Centre and another not that far away towards the Bel Azul Hotel on the upper road .Both have food wine toileties etc prices seem reasonable anyway hope this helps.

As bob says there is a large Pingo Doce supermarket in the Lido area which stocks everything you might need. There is also another in the Forum centre and one on the main road above the Lido close to the Monumental hotel. I wouldn't equate them to Asda as they are smaller and more expensive but still cheaper than the small Spar-type places you will find. If you have room in your luggage take tea and coffee as they seem dearer there but wouldn't bother with anything else. Booze is cheaper so don't cart any out and the usual brands of spirits are available. The local beer is Coral, a lager style beer and an acceptable red wine is Esteva if you don't want to push the boat out! The Pingos at the Forum centre and the top road at the Lido sell carry out food which you fill a container with and is weighed and charged by weight. Good value and after 9 p.m. half price!

We always take tea bags out as difficult to get decent English tea there but have always found coffee is much cheaper there if you are talking real ground coffee/coffee beans or decaf ground coffee. Pingo Doce own brand is excellent and about half the UK cost, thus we always come back with several packs. Instant may well be more expensive!
