Yes you will walk along the main road parallel with the harbur. The cable car is at the end, you can't miss it. It is likely to be busy when ships are in though, so be prepared for lots of people. The toboggan ride does not return all the way to the City, when you get off, you can get a bus into the city centre or walk down. There will be taxis there but they charge very high fees for a short ride. If you chose to walk down there are coffee shops on the way where you can sit outside for a beer or coffee. The flower and fruit market is close to the cable car station and there are also many places for drinks and/or food. There are also drinks along the way to and from the harbour. If you do use taxis, make sure they use the meter, it is a requirement within the City limits. Enjoy your visit to Madeira, a beautiful Island.

Hi Northernteacher,

just to show it on map:

this would be the way from the cruise ship to the cable car:

This is the track of the toboggan ride:

At the end of the track there are mostly waiting taxis:

And the way a taxi would take to the mercado dos lavradores would be like this:

Hi,

we recently came back from Funchal and we intended to go to Monte on the cable car ( 15 euros each return or 10 euros one way) but after hearing about Daniels Taxi's we decided to e-mail his wife and she arranged everything for us and Daniel picked us up at the right time at our hotel.

Of the option she suggested we choose the trip to Monte and Daniel left us to walk around for as long as we wanted then we had the option to pay for the sledge ride down and he would pick us up there. Then he took us to the view point overlooking Nuns valley ( the highlight of our week in Madeira) and then down into the valley below and finally to a view point over Funchal. This 1/2 day tour was 65 euros in a 7 seat taxi and it was well worth it.

Hi,

we did not walk back from the sledge ride but I think it is about 2+ miles back to town but there were taxi's to take you back but I they were expensive.

@ Northernteacher:

If you really want to walk the way from end of toboggan ride down to Mercado dos Lavradores:

okay, it is possible, but it's all straight downhill, be sure your knees will make no problems ;-)

But in case of walking I would not take the road which a taxi would drive, that will be a walk along stonewalls and on partly busy streets.

For a walk down I would recommand a way like this:

http://bit.ly/1nLDLKO

mostly along the Rua da Torrinha, which leads through gardens and banana plantations.

This walk will be 3 km / ~1,8 miles, and if you take a nearer look to the last part of the way, you may notice a little diversion at Rua 5 de Outubro;

at the corner there you'll find the "Fabrica Santo Antonio"

http://bit.ly/1nLHtE7

where you can get the best sorbet madeirensian style (imo) and also very good bolo de mel and other typical Madeira cakes. If then you'd go further through this street (Traversa do Forno) and then turn right, you'll find the "Madeira Wine Company" .

*have a good walk*
