Hi. I'm off to Madeira next week, can anyone tell me if there are many mossies around at the moment.

1. Re: Mosquitos

A few of the indigenous mossys are about but I haven't seen any reports of bites from the Aedes aegypt mossy. May be a good idea to have an insect repellent at the ready, especially in the forest areas and at dusk, if sitting outside.

The mossies are very quiet this year - hardly seen one. They generally tend to appear after the first heavy rainfall - and there has been very little rain in Funchal this year so far. Flowercity is correct though - bring a DEET based repellent such as "Jungle Formula", available quite cheaply through Amazon (certainly used to be).

Also lemon soap or gel - the Mosquitos hate it and it works every time for us.

Haven't seen a single one but my daughter got bitten to death one evening. If you attract mossies come prepared.
