How to split North Portugal-Porto/Douro valley

I am trying to plan a trip to Portugal, focusing on the North, with a few days in Lisbon/Sintra and maybe the Alentejo region.

My focus is Northern Portugal and I am in LOVE with the Douro valley from the picures.

We have 10 days and need to spend a couple in Lisbon since we will fly in or out of there (or maybe Madrid since Delta flies there direct)

Question--- if we have about 5-6 days for Norhtern Portugal--- do we need a car? Do we spend 2 or 3 days in Porto and 2 or 3 in maybe Pinhao ? (Casa do Visconde de Chanceleiros?). how about Braga? is that another city? Or stay in Porto and take day trips? or stay in the douro valley and take trips to Porto?

thank you

(It will be me and my husband in late August, Not concerned about budget)

IMHO day trips from Porto to the Douro wine region involve too much commuting time; better to stay a while in Porto (with day trips to Guimarães, Braga, Viano do Castelo, Espino, even Aveiro) and take a car to stay of few days in the Douro (quintas, Douro museum in Regua, Pinhao, Lamego, Coa valley rock art).

Once your plans are firm, and since budget is no object, please send for me.

With Porto as base you can take day trips by public transportation. For the Douro region you could rent a car.

The best option is to set your base in Porto. From there, in 1 hour drive max you can visit almost all northern cities - Braga, Guimarães, Ponte de Lima, Barcelos and more. Keep in mind that northern west of Portugal is also a wine region for Vinho Verde. Like Douro, there are vneyards and wine estates you can visit.

Regarding Douro, 2 days are a good option, staying overnight in a wine estate to feel the real Douro.

In the city of Porto, a walking tour can show you everything you need to see and experience.

On your way to or from Lisbon, you can stop on some unique cities and villages like Aveiro, Coimbra or Nazaré.

To do all this and not to worry about details and finding places, a private tour guide is the best option. Do it by yourself is also possible (all roads are in good conditions) must you must prepare yourself with information in advance.

Hope this answer helped you.

We flew in and out of Madrid (direct non-stop from Philadelphia). We wanted to see Avila and Salamanca, Spain, so we spent a night in both. We spent one night in Vila Nova de Foz Coa, from where we visited a bronze age archeological site. We then drove to and stayed at Quinta Morocco, where they grow the grapes and bottle the wine. You can see Trip Advisor reviews for this. The dinner there was delicious, and the owner had interesting observations about wine and the wine business. The next three nights were in Porto. We then stayed two nights in Guimaraes, which is a really nice small town, and a good base for seeing an excavated Celtic site. We drove from there to Braganca, spending the night in a small village about 30 minutes away. Our last night was in San Lorenzo de el Escorial, Spain, which is a short drive to the Madrid airport.

Hi redshale, in which town is Quinta Morocco? We are driving from Madrid to the Douro and then to Lisbon. We'd like to spend two nights in Douro area, so only the 1st and last day will be a lot of driving. I'm having some issues finding a place that isn't too far out of the way considering the route. Thanks!

Quinta de Moroccos is not in a town, but is very close to Peso da Regua, about 100 km east of Porto. It is right on the river. You can check out their web site at www.quintademoroccos.com.
