Great Choice of hotel.
I hope you manage to get a river view room.
Cross the road in front of the hotel, towards Ponte de Dom Luis.
Pass the first bar. On your left is Chez Lapin - excelent service and menu, unpretentious, good wine list too.
All of 100 yards from the hotel door!
For somewhere very traditional, cheap and interesting, busy with locals, leave the hotel, turn left and immediately left down a narrow street alongside the hotel. Within 30 metres there is an unremarkable looking restaurant on your right.
To be honest it doesn't look too appealing, but persevere. Chaotic, noisy, great fun. Sorry, but I don't think I ever knew its name.
Caveat - this is based on a visit 18 months ago.
we visited the ...think it is called the Tin ho Rest which is an international rest, as you go over the main iron bridge into vila nova de gaia it is immediately on the right and is a modern shed come building they have on the waterfront, very popular, food excellant very good service, good wine list, and superb views once it gets dark the view down the river is ore inspiring
nice hotel... glad to see good recommendations, just one to avoid: Casa da Alzira very close to where you are and frequently advertised... poor quality, dishonestly overpriced, [-----] service... and we speak fluent portuguese - an embarrassment to an otherwise beautiful city... ate beautifully and often downtown, but for a weekend, stick with the views close to your hotel...
i'm down in Porto for work at the moment, went to a really good buffet restaurant some days ago, called Tromba Rija, its on the river side in Gaia.
it cost 30 euro's but you can eat and drink as much as you want (including alcoholic drinks, starters, main course, dessert...everything as much as you want) the staff is friendly and they speak english, the food is really nice, lots of different things, and the place looks nice too.
I would suggest Don Tonho, which is 1 block down from your hotel, on the same street. By the way, you will love the hotel. ideal location, very friendly staff, fantastic beds and great decor.... Porto is a very romantic, colorful city. You will truly enloy your stay. The weather should be still quite nice at that point. We are here in mid October and the weather is magnificent. Definitely bring super comfortble shoes. Very hilly terrain and cobblestone streets.....
We are also planning to stay in the Pestana Porto. Does that have its own restaurant, and is that worth eating in?
What do you think, thanks?

My personal view - Yes, it has a restaurant.
No, not worth it apart from breakfast.
(Basically, compared to local restaurants, there is little atmosphere and it is not value for money).
In any case, you have several choices of restaurant in 5 minutes or so walking distance - see above.
Have a great time!
Thank you - they all sound great! We are looking forward to our trip next summer.
