restaurants in Porto

We will be in Porto for a short break in late November and are thinking about some of the following restaurants: Bull & Bear; Marisqueira Mauritania; Mariazinha; Rosinha. We are stayin in Foz, so we are thinking that the restaurants in Matosinhos will work well for us. We are looking for very good regional food based on quality local ingredients from a kitchen that cares about its quality. We are not fussy about expenses, but we would like to avoid ostentatious or pretentious places. We would very much appreciate any thoughts or advice for us. Thank you.

First off, let me say that I haven’t eaten in any of the restaurants you mention so I can’t give you an opinion, except to say that Bull & Bear enjoys an excellent reputation. It is however quite upmarket, so you might find it a tad ostentatious / pretentious.

As a general comment, be aware that Portuguese food is very simple and you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money to eat well. For example, the fish restaurants in Matosinhos generally serve the same fare: grilled fish, served whole (heads and tails included) and accompanied by baked potatoes, salad and loads of olive oil. It’s great because the fish is fresh, but it isn’t haute cuisine.

If you’re staying in Foz and looking for something a little more sophisticated, try Cafeina, which is a Portuguese-French- Italian fusion restaurant, very nice.

In the Ribeira (waterfront) area, Dom Tonho serves authentic local food, the ambiance is friendly but it’s somewhat upmarket and prices reflect this.

Also keep a look out for the Churrasquieras (barbecue restaurants) that are very commonplace in northern Portugal. Ask around when you get here, everyone has their own favourite.

I would recommend "A Marisqueira de Matosinhos" if you want some of the freshest seafood available. It is located at Rua Roberto Ivens, 717, 4450-255 Matoshinhos.

Hi HCmH and UTProf: thank you very much for your recommendations. We would definitely be on the lookout for something regional/local. Your description of something simple and honest actually sounds very refreshing -- as long as the ingredients are fresh! Again, thank you for your helpful suggestions.
