Depending on what interests you, you could try a trip to one of the following cities: Guimarães, Braga or Aveiro. All are easily reached by toll paying motorway, about 45 minutes drive. Guimarães is my personal favourite, a well kept historic city with a charming centre and an interesting 1000 year old catsle. Braga is an ecclesiastical centre, whose best known attraction is the church of Bom Jesus, located dramatically in the hills overlooking the city. Aveiro is a city built in a canal, which leads some people to call it the Venice of Portugal, though that is something of an exageration.

There are also beach towns like Espinho or Póvoa de Varzim easily reachable if that is more to your liking.

I'd agree with any and all of those suggestions having spent several days in Porto last November and seen them all!

Much of interest in all those towns and cities and also on the way. You do have to do a bit of walking though once there though. If you get the chance and choose that city, take the cable car at Guimaraes (if it's a nice day) and go to the top of the 'mountain' for some spectacular views over the city.
