Porto neighborhoods and itinerary

I am going to Porto with my family for 3-5 days (two adults, and 12 and 16 y.o. daughters). We like to walk, sit in cafes, walk on the beach and swim and bike and are interested in a trip to the douro. also are interested in the old town but don't necessarily feel we have to stay there if we can be close to the water. We will likely have a car. Where would you recommend staying in Porto?

"if we can be close to the water" I suppose that you mean the ocean, because you can stay close to the river if you stay in the older part of the city. And staying at Porto and close to the ocean it's a challenge, I can only remember Hotel Boavista https://www.hotelboavista.com/cms/?id=1

You don't need a car in Porto. It will only be a hassle. Public transportation is very good and for the Douro you can either take a day trip or the train. From the airport you can take the metro downtown and further.

Adding public transportation from the Boavista hotel to Porto downtown: you can take either bus 500 or historic tram nr. 1. It will take approx. 15-20 minutes.

For a Duoro River Cruise, this website is easier to understand.

We searched several sights and it was frustrating. We e-mailed them for further info and they responded quickly.
