Porto to Cascais- travelling with a toddler

Me my husband and our 17 month are travelling for the first time to Portugal for a week. We are planning to travel to Porto and travel to Cascais sightseeing stay there for a night or two and travel back to Porto maybe even a day trip to Lisbon.

What is the possible cheap option to Cascais without a car...? Or is it virtually impossible..

To travel from Porto to Cascais by public transport, one has to pass through Lisbon.

This article should clarify matters: http://bit.ly/14YrWrT

Many thanks!

How long does it take?

It seems like a long and indirect journey that might be difficult especially for toddler, pram, luggage etc...

Lisboa to Porto by train it's about 3h (there are 2 types of trains (IC-Intercidades it has a some more stops and AP- Alfapendular less stops). The last station is Santa Apolónia, from there the best (having luggage and a toddler) it's a taxi to Cascais (about 50€).

But instead of staying in Cascais and Lisboa why don't you stay the all time in Lisboa or Cascais? If you stay in one of them it's very easy and cheap to reach Cascais/Lisboa by train (it's about 35min) and spend the day there, that way you only deal with the luggage and other hassles just once.
