Need Advice with Greece trip in Sept

We booked a flight to Greece arriving in Athens the 9th of Sept and departing Athens the 20t of Sept. Would like to spend 3 or 4 nights on Santorini and 3 or 4 nights in Mykonos. Looking for advice in what would be a good mx in duration between Athens, Santorini, & Mykonos. Would like suggestions for hotels with a good view but still reasonable. And what would the best way to get to the islands? Fly or take a high speed boat? Also, we are thinking about booking it with Fantacy travel in Athens? Hope someone can give us advice as we have never been to Greece? Thank you.

Hi there

I'll leave the two islands to the DEs for those places but just a few general pointers.

You will be arriving in Athens airport so it makes sense to connect straight away to your first island, whether that be Mykonos or Santorini. This saves loads of time and hopefully gets you into island relax mode on ther first day. Leaving Athens till last also avoids the risk, however small, of missing your flight back to the US should a ferry or internal flight from the islands be delayed or cancelled.

Regarding the islands, there are high speed ferry links between them on a regular basis so no problem doing either way around.

Looking at your schedule, you arrive on Sept 9th and depart on the 20th, so you only really have 10 days to fill, plus the two part days for fly in and fly home. Try to leave at least two full days for Athens - there is so much to see and it would be a shame to miss out on it all seeing as you are coming such a long way.

If you arrive on Athens airport PM, book an evening flight and go straight to Santorini. Stay there 3-4 nights, then ferry it to Mykonos. 4 nights or if possible 3 nights+one day and overnight ferry to Athens, than Athens till you leave.

That was you are not backtracking to Athens and you have your departure flight insured from ferry delays or whatever...

Santorini is mostly a scenic island, and if you want a room with view at the caldera, you'll have to pay a lot. Not many beaches, and not exactly qa beach island. If you don't mind the caldera view and you like to be near a beach, then Kamari and Perissa on the other side of the island are a good option.

Mykonos is more of a party island but has many good beaches too. I am not very familiar with Mykonos, so someone else may advise you on where to base your self.

According to your interests, you may want to add an extra day to one of your destinations or the other...

Mykonos and Santorini are the two more expensive Greek islands. "Reasonable" means different things to different people. What is your budget (euros)?

Hi,

Thank you for the information. We were thinking about a 3 or 4 star hotel and I don't know what that would average in Euros? Even though Santorini is beautiful we thought more that 3 days would start to get boring. We are in our 50's but love to dance ( not the young rock music). We also enjoy the beaches and from reading about Santorini the beaches are very limited there. Thanks!!

Hi mariha

Great minds.......!!

pa05 - Santorini has stunning scenery but the beaches are composed primarily of black volcanic grit so certainly not the best for sunbathing or swimming. You could add a day to Mykonos where the beaches are superb or tag a day on to Athens to give yourselves plenty of time to see all that's on offer.

Just bear in mind that both islands are amongst the most expensive in Greece; there are many other islands that can offer you what you seek but at a significantly lower price.

If we replaced Mykonos with another Island, what Island would you suggest?

Hi there

Well, I've never visited the island, but many on here wax lyrical about Naxos which is no further from Santorini than Mykonos is so that might be somewhere to look at. I'd suggest you send a PM to either greek-traveller or heimdall, our DEs for the island. They may well of course drop by here and give you the info you need.
