Looking for a good itinerary for 2 weeks in Greece

Hi everyone. I am heading to Greece for my birthday the last week in May for 2 weeks. I'm looking for suggestions on how best to spend those two weeks. I am traveling alone and enjoy history, water activites, hiking, shopping and great food/wine. Fairly certain that I do not want to visit Athens and Mykonos at this time but am open to all other areas. Also, would a side trip to Turkey be doing to much with the amount of time I have? Thanking you in advance for your suggestions.

Hey and welcome jadab97:-) Well, to start off.. am guessing you'll be flying from the States.. so Athens would be the obvious airport to be arriving Country in;-) Only way to bypass Athens would be to hook up to an isle or other destination in the Country via a plane change in Europe that offers various destinations! FWIW.. and coming the distance, Athens, IMO, should not be missed;-)

You've got a pandora's box of choices for what you're looking for.. the isle of Rhodes sounds like it should fit the bill.. along with a trek to possibly Naupolion in the Peloponesse would make for a nice mix;-) Santorini is super popular..may fit the bill as well.. spectacular and unique isle offering jaw-dropping views of it's caldera along with it's now finally opened Akrotiri site! If you fly into Athens, there are numerous daily flights to both isles..these are short, approx 50 min flights .. take a look at www.olympicair.com/ www.aegeanair.com/ and sign up for their email alerts now.. the latter has some great deals offered throughout the year;-) Would most definitely start reading up on the various isles groups.. Cyclades, Dodecanesse, Ionian, etc.. see which you feel best suits your interests, prefs, etc..;-)

To get to Turkey, you can certainly ferry over from Rhodes.. it's a popular 'day trek' to Marmaris from there but for the most part, unless you venture out a bit, pretty touristy! If you head to the isle of Samos, there are also excursions to Kusadasi in Turkey for the day taking you to Ephesus! Again, depends on where and for long long you're looking to head to Turkey.. you can always hop on a plane from Athens for a few days to Istanbul as well;-)

You're going at a marvelous time.. not full peak and the weather should be magnifient! Happy planning.. and EnjoY!

Hi there

A side trip to Turkey is possible but only really as a daytrip from one of the Dodecanese islands that offers regular ferriers/hydrofoils across to the Turkish coast. Rhodes, as Litsa suggests, is one option and would certainly be more than enough to fill your two weeks. Choosing Rhodes as a base also means you can take daytrips to it's two neighbouring islands of Symi and Halki, both well worth a visit for their unique charm.

Rhodes offers everything on your wish list and is large enough that you won't be scratching your head after a few days and wondering what's left to see. The island is replete with ancient sites, great scenery, superb beaches and plenty of rural and rustic villages that are easy to access from either the main west coast or east coast roads.

The island offers good bus services too, so getting around is easy if you don't wish to rent a car.

A selection of photo sets to give you a taster..

If you want to include a side trip to Turkey, you could combine it with a visit to Chios and Samos. Chios has some of the most fascinating history of any of the Greek Isles, and from Samos you can easily spend a couple nights in Selcuk, taking in Ephesus and a day trip to Priene, Miletus and Didyma. Those are some of the most impressive Greek and Roman ruins in the Mediterranean.

If you want to avoid Athens, plan on a flight that gets you into Greece as early in the morning as possible, and then catch a connecting flight to whichever island you choose to visit. You'll have to spend at least one night in Athens before returning home, which isn't a bad thing. It's worthwhile to spend a few hours wandering around the Plaka and seeing the nearby sites.
