Honeymoon in Greece & Italy -- late September/early October

Hello,

My fiance and I are trying to plan our honeymoon in Greece and Italy in late September/early October, 9/30/13 - 10/13/13. We live in Boston and are thinking we will fly to Greece first as we'd like to visit one of the islands and spend some time on the beaches. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on where we should travel to in Greece/where it will be the warmest that time of year? Also, how easy is it to travel to Italy from Greece? We will likely fly into Rome or Florence from wherever we are in Greece.

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks for your help!

Hi there

As you intend visiting Greece in early October, then statistically it makes more sense to head for one of the islands that are a long way south and east, where the better weather should hang on for longer. Rhodes is an options to start with, we have been to the island several times in early October and always enjoyed superb weather.

As you are flying in from the US you will almost ceratinly arrive in Greece at Athens airport. What I'd suggest is that you try to connect straight away to whichever island you choose, all Greek islands are a 50 min or less flight from Athens and there are several domestic airlines that offer this service.

So, arrive in either Rhodes or wherever, spend your time there, fly back to Athens ( allow a day or two for Athens if you wish to see the sights), and then fly Athens - Rome.

Rhodes, as well as staying warmer longer, is a wonderful blend of history, scenery, great beaches, ancient sites, museums, walking opportunities, bustling towns and pretty, rural villages. You would be able to see most of the major sights in 6-7 days, preferably with a rental car although the buses are pretty good.

All the best, sandy beaches are down the eastern coast which also tends to be way more sheltered than the west coast. There's a main east coast road, a west coast road, and loads of lesser roads that run into the island's interior, some of which link both coasts.

Lots of photos of Rhodes here, from our previous couple of trips..

Personally would opt for late September when most of the islands are still fully functional, some of them tend to "close the shop" early October.

GBfrom Dav.. has given you nice advice.

Crete might be considered as warm there, but after having said that September is usually quite warm anywhere in Cyclades island group as well.
