Help with Greek choice for next years hol..

Looking at next years hol and can't decide between the following:

Lesvos, Stoupa, Crete or Kefalonia.

Just wondered if anyone had been to all/some of the above and could assist!

Travelling as a family of 4 kids will be 4 and 2. We have previously enjoyed Skala and Kassiopi and this Sept we're off to Elounda to give you an idea...Quite like resorts with a harbour or nice square if that helps! Def dont like the resorts where it's just one road through with tavernas eitherside.

Also looked at Kefalos, Hanioti and Nidri but not sure if the resorts are to big?!

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi there

I've been to all except Stoupa. Here are few suggestions for each island, somewhere to start at least. All have pleasant harbours..

Lesvos - Molivos

Crete - Sissi

Kefalonia - Agia Efimia

A few general thoughts..

Lesvos is a beautiful island, but apart from a decent bus service that links the four north coastal resorts of Anaxos, Petra, Molivos and Eftalou, services are quite scarce and it would be impossible to explore the island unless you rent a car. Lesvos is a large island too, and distances can be quite long between various parts of the island.

Crete - the largest of all Greek islands, ideally suited for two weeks as there is so much to see. You'll do little more than scratch the surface in two weeks but it does have a good bus service, especially along the north coast where Sissi is. You do have to walk up to the main road from the village for the buses, takes 15-25 minutes according to where your accommodation is.

Kefalonia - another fairly large island, good roads but awful bus services. What services there are radiate from the capital Argostoli. Lassi is the closest beach resort, just a couple of kms to the south but it is a "main road and strip" type resort although it is laid back and has some great beaches. Agia Efimia is pretty, not much of a beach though.

Really, it would help hugely to know whether you want to expolore the island you choose, and if so, whether you will use buses, organised trips or rent a car.

Stoupa doesn't really fit the bill. It's mostly one road, although along the beach. It'd difficult to get out of as the main road each way from Stoupa isn't something you want to do again having been along it once.

Stoupa has a band of absolute devotees who love the place, but it doesn't really fit your description.

We found Alykanas when looking for combination of beach and small harbour, it suited our kids well, starting at 3 and 18 months, going up to teenagers, about every 4 years.

That's really helpful thanks. Realistically looking at Lesvos and Crete I think from what I can gather. Quite happy to rent a car and go on organised trips. Usually hire a car for 4 days.

Thought I'd drive over to Sissi in Sept whilst saying in Elounda to see what it's like.

Lesvos sounds lovely would love to hear of any experiences....Would Molivos be suitable with pushchairs or would I be better on Anaxos or Petra?

Have heard some lovely comments about Kefalos too

Thanks for your help!

Would not choose Molivos if you have a pushchair. The town is built on a hill with steep cobbled streets & many steps. Petra would be a better option if you want a village atmosphere. But do visit Molivos of course!

A car is the best way to explore as it is a large island & you can explore areas which all have a very different feel. You will think you have several islands in one handy package!
