Athens and the Ionian Islands

After doing some reading about the Greek islands, my husband and I have selected the Ionians for our destination for a September vacation. The reasons were thinking the Ionians is because they are more off the beaten path than the typical tourist loop through the islands, have many beautiful/adventurous natural wonders (we want to scuba dive, fish, do water sports, swim lots) and seem to have a nice mix of cultural sights. We are planning on flying to Rome from the Ionians and have three weeks to split between the two countries.

We are flying into Athens and plan to stay there for 1.5-2 days then would like to make our way over to the Ionians. My questions are-

1. Best mode of travel to get from Athens to the Ionians?

2. Best boats to take between islands?

3. Best airport to fly to Rome from?

4. General words of advice about our itinerary idea.

Thanks!!!

Hi Jody,

The Ionian Islands can be divided into two.

Corfu and its small satellite islands

Kefalonia with Zakynthos, Ithaca and Lefkada and some smaller satellite islands.

On the assumption that you are going to spend no more than two weeks on the islands I suggest that you pick either Corfu or the "Kefalonian group".

You can get flights to Corfu or Kefalonia from Athens. You can get a bus (coach direct ) from Athens to Kefalonia including ferry.

There are flights from Kefalonia to Italy but I do not know which city they fly to.

A few points to get you started and I am sure others will have other/different ideas

Happy planning

Bob

Hi there

This website suggests that you have several possibilities of flying to Italy from Kefalonia.

Ryanair to Pisa/Milan

Easyjet to Milan

Blu Express to Rome

Olympic to Naples/Milan/Trieste

Aegean to Florence/Venice

You'll have to double check that whomever you choose flies to the specific place in Italy on the day you want to travel.

3. Re: Athens and the Ionian Islands

The Ionions are some of the most touristy of the Greek islands.

Direct Charter flights from Europe account for that and tourists from Italy coming over by the ferries which you may not know about from where you are on the planet.

From what you say you have only about 10 days which is not a lot to cover 4 large islands and 2 or so smaller ones.

1. All the larger Ionion islands have flights from Athens and Bus/ferry links several times a day.

2. Ferry links are complex - Kefalonia has 6 ports for example, and it's easier to consider Corfu and Paxos separate from Lefkada, Ithaki, Kefalonia, Zakinthos.

3. No idea, but as mentioned there are bound to be flights from say Kefalonia or Corfu to somewhere in Italy, though they may fade out in late Serptember due to the Italian peak tourist season.

4. Allocate a short time and then decide on island hopping makes no sense. Therefore maybe you should be looking to one of the larger islands like Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakinthos, which will have the facilities you require they are touristy and certainly not 'off the beaten track'.

What islands would you recommend that are relatively easy to reach, have an airport to fly out of and more off the beaten path?

5. Re: Athens and the Ionian Islands

Hi again,

One possibility is to fly into Kefalonia, hire a car and get the ferry over to Ithaca which is only a 40 minute boat trip. Ithaca is relatively unspoilt.

Then reverse at the end of your Ionian time

Hey and welcome JodyLee22:-) Well, for the most part, isles off the beaten track don't have airports.. reached by ferries;-) You may want to take a look at Skiathos which does have an airport.. a 15 miin ferry ride brings you to www.skopelosweb.gr/ and another 15 min ferry ride to www.alonissos.gr/ The latter is home to The Marine Park.. you can google/youtube for some fascinating info;-) These isles are lush, green and moutainous with fabulous crystal clear, turqouise waters.. most beaches are good for snorkeling since they're pebbly/rocky;-) Also just to note, these 3 isles in the Sporadic isle group are super close together as mentioned.. taking about 15 min ferry ride between them.. you can even do day trips while basing on 1;-)

To get to Rome, you'd need to fly out of Athens unless there are any directs?! Skiathos is the only one of the 3 having an airport with lots of charter/package deals coming in from the UK, Netherlands.. possibly Italy but best to check in dedicated 'Skiathos Forum' for best advise .. you can check www.olympicair.com/ for the short puddle jumper flight to/from Athens and Skiathos.. takes barely 25 min;-) Sept is a wonderful time.. see you there;-) Happy planning.. and enJOY!

Thank you everyone for the knowledge and advice! I'm reassessing everything...wondering if we should stick with closer islands and fly out of one at the end of our time. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions!
