Greek island in late September

My boyfriend and I are visiting Greece in late September/early October, flying to and from Athens. We will be in Greece for 10 days overall and allowing for a couple of days in Athens at the end of the trip, we will have about a week to visit an island (the last week of September and perhaps a day or two in to October).

Originally we were planning to stay around the Saronic islands so as not to waste time on ferries. However, the more I research it it seems that the Saronic islands are more like an extension of Athens and perhaps we would be better going further afield and staying in one place for the week, Santorini, Paros and Naxos are all options within a few hours of Athensr.

My question really is where will still be somewhat lively this late in the season? I know everything will be winding down at this stage - we are in our late 20's and not looking for partying but it would be nice if there were still some busy restaurants and tavernas for some atmosphere.

Thanks!

Hi there

Rather than spend hours on a ferry why not just fly to your chosen island? All Greek islands with an airport are a maximum of an hour's flight from Athens and many are much closer. You'll arrive at Athens airport so why not try to connect whilst you're there? Saves loads of time and gets you to your island in way less time.

Here are the domestic schedules to all islands from Athens, just run your cursor over any island and click for the info...

The weather can begin to get less predictable in late September/early October so I would consider an island as far east or south as you can, maybe Kos, Rhodes, Crete although you'd be very unlucky indeed to get bad weather on any of the islands you mention.

The season runs till the end of the final week of October so most places will still be open, and there should still be plenty of people around.

Yes we had thought about flying but so far any of the flights we have looked at have been very expensive compared to ferries - perhaps it is worth it for the amount of time saved but we are trying to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Thanks for your reply, I'm glad to hear that there will still be plenty of people around, I was starting to think we had left it far too late!

Naxos will be an excellent choice, and in town you will find open tavernas and restaurants. Weather is nice, and the sea still swimmable. Best choice of accomodation will be the St. George Beach area - adjacent to town, and many hotels still open.

Naxos is the largest of the Cycladic islands, and also has a very scenic and spectacular interior with some 30 authentic villages around.

Here is to give you some ideas:

The tourist areas around western beaches will be closing down, but you can still enjoy the beaches there (among the best beaches in Greece):

Until the end of September it will be possible to do day excursions to Delos \ Mykonos, Santorini and the Small Cyclades. All year around it is possible to visit Paros for a day using ordinary ferries.

Hope this helps.

Look at SkyExpress flights - 2 for one deals on already cheap fares and a good airline.

For example we will shortly fly Lesvos to Samos for 55Eu.
