Need help with an itinerary

Hi,

I am travelling to Greece with two other females on July 6-17. We'd like to spend time in Athens and then go around to some of the islands. Any suggestions on where to go and how much time to spend there? We are all in our early twenties and enjoy both nightlife and history, but are on a backpacking budget.

Thank you!

Hi there

We need much more from you to stand any chance of helping out. You could spend a year in Greece and not scratch the surface so how long can you stretch your trip out to? As it stands you have what looks like ten FULL days plus a part day at either end for arrival and departure. Where else to go totally depends upon what your personal interests are. There are more than 200 inhabited islands in Greece, plus Athens and an extensive mainland.

"History" applies to anywhere in Greece so the first real question is to ask how much time you want to devote to Athens? You need a bare minimum of two full days to see the major outdoor sights, three to be thorough, and more if you wish to take in some of the museums. You can spend a full day in the National Archaeological Museum without any problems....

No more than two islands or you will spend all your available time in transit, packing, unpacking, and so on. Connect to the first island when you arrive at Athens airport as it saves lots of time. Leave Athens till last, that way you are back on the mainland in plenty of time prior to your homebound flight.

As a general rule, the Cyclades island chain is the easiest to get around on the ferries, with the Dodecanese a close second, so read up on those with the help of a good guide book ( the Rough Guide to Greece is hard to beat). Take a look at the "Top questions for Greece" to the top right of the pages here, a wealth of info is there. Make a shortlist of a few places/islands/sights you like the look of and then come back to the fourms for some specifc help.

For backpacking and night life Ios. Short ferry trip to Santorini for history.
