10 days in Greece July 2014 Help

My family of 4 (including 2 sons ages 21 & 18) will be visiting Greece for 10 days in July 2014. I need some help with itinerary. Would like to stay in Athens for 2-3 nights and then onto islands Santorini and Mykenos. We are interested in ruins and major tourist sites (son is an architecture student) and then onto the beaches. A few questions - 1) Should we fly in/out of Athens? How do we travel to islands - ferries? 3) Athens hotel recommendation centrally located ? 3) How many nights in each location? 4 ) Hotel recommendations on islands with views and beach location? Thank you for your help!

Hi there

First thing to ask if whether those ten days include a part day at either end for arrival and departure. If they don't then at best you have eight full days and you will be pushing it to see Athens plus two islands within that time frame. Has a tour operator recommended Mykonos and Santorini to you, I ask as these appear to be the only two Greek islands that are ever mentioned by potential visitors from the US, and there are 200+ islands to choose from.

Santorini's beaches are composed of black, volcanic grit, far from the best. But, before we start to offer suggestions, it would help to know how many full days you actually have please.

Santorini and Mykonos are the two most expensive and upmarket Greek islands and you will find yourselves among crowds of other North American visitors, including day visitors off cruise ships. There are designer shops and posh hotels and restaurants, though you can find cheaper places. Not a typical Greek experience but most American visitors seem to love it.

Similar questions to yours have been asked multiple times, so if you search the forums you will find many recommendations for hotels and advice about travel to those destinations. First select the relevant forum (Athens or Santorini or whatever) and use the yellow search button to enter your query (hotels, flights etc).

If major tourist sites, ruins and beaches are your primary interests, I think there are a lot of options preferable to Santorini and Mykonos, especially as you'll be coming at high season.

One would be to just rent a car and stay on the Peloponnese in two towns - maybe Napflio for the bulk of your time and Monemvasia for a night. You could probably fit in a night in Delphi as well.

Another would be to focus on one island; Naxos, with its 13th C castle, tower houses, a good temple, the unfinished kouri, and excellent beaches (and you could take a daytrip to Delos, arguably Greece's most spectacular ruins). A third would be to focus on eastern Crete and its ruins at Knossos, Malia, Phaestos, Gournia, Agia Triada, and Gortyna. Also of interest are the leper island of Spinalonga and the monastery at Toplou.

Even if you have 10 full days, Athens and two islands would be pushing it, unless you stuck to those close to Athens, like Aegina and Poros.

Hey and welcome Lisa E:-) Coming trans from Boston, you'll be landing in Athens.. take a look at www.kayak.com/ for some options.. making 1 plane change en route in Europe somewhere.. unless someone adds a direct this year:-) When allocating days/nights, don't forget that 'Day 1' is en route loosing the day arriving on 'Day 2'.. so it looks like you'll have 9 days.. 8 nights?;-)

Santorini and Mykonos are indeed popular with 1st timers.. most here 'been there, done that'.. and it will be in full heave with visitors from all around the world, not only us Americans;-) Having said that, a good way to save precious time and avoid any backtracking would be to just fly out to an isle upon arrival off the long haul in Athens.. sign up now for email alerts with www.aegeanair.com/ www.olympicair.com/ The flight takes barely 45 min to Santorini.. 25 to Mykonos.. and you're off to a great start de-lagging and getting into zone on an isle.. save Athens for your finale;-)

You can fly into either Santorini or Mykonos.. whichever works best with your arrival into Athens.. you can then ferry between the 2.. keep an eye out on www.gtp.gr/ www.openseas.gr/ for ferry schedules.. then either fly or ferry back to Athens.. but would just note that if you start off with Mykonos and then head to Santorini, the ferry ride can be long since it's a bit of distance so a flight back from there would be a time-saver;-)

You'll be ready at this point to take on Athens and all it offers having gotten into zone and your land legs back.. keeping the itinerary running consecutively .. again, with no backtracking.. maximizes your time;-) Depending on how many nights you do have.. if it is 8 or 9, you can do an even split of 3 at each.. or 3x2x3.. whichever way works best for you.. your interests/prefs, travel style;-)

For specifics on each isle/destination.. hotels, etc., best to start a post in each destination's dedicated forum for better exposure so those in the know can find you;-) Make sure you state a budget spread.. as well as any other questions you may have about the destination! Happy planning to you.. and EnJOY!

Thank you for your input. We will have 10 nights in Greece not including our travel time to/from. We were thinging of Santorini and Mykenos because they seem like the popular places to go. We do not expect to return to Greece anytime soon so we want to see the highlights. I will have to check out the other islands you suggested. We are definitely looking for some beautiful beaches so I am open to suggestions and I will have to do some more research. Thank you all for your assistance.

Sure, they are touristy and expensive. But Mykonos (note the spelling) and Santorini are great choices for a first-ever visit to Greece. Your family would enjoy both islands.

Your son is interested in architecture and ruins, so he would enjoy seeing the Cycladic architecture on Mykonos, the cliff houses and other unique buildings on Santorini, and the historic ruins on Delos island (easily accessed by ferry six days a week from Mykonos).

As for beaches, Mykonos certainly has them. More than 20 major beaches, in fact. Each one with a different vibe and personality. If your kids like a good party scene, they'll have a blast in July at some of the beaches and some of the clubs in Mykonos Town.

Mykonos will be very busy in July, though, both with daily cruise ship visitors and travellers staying on the island in hotels and private villas. If you would prefer a less hectic island, consider nearby Naxos (to which you can fly from Athens on Olympic). Outstanding beaches, spectacular scenery, intriguing mountain villages and much cheaper to visit than Mykonos and Santorini. Plus, you can take a day trip to Delos and Mykonos from Naxos, or take a daytrip to Santorini.

There's thousands of photos of Mykonos, Naxos, Santorini and other Greek islands on my Flickr page, including hundreds of pics of the major Mykonos beaches. Check them out to see if any particular destination appeals to you: www.flickr.com/photos/mygreecetravelblog/

For advice about Mykonos accommodations, consider posting a separate question in the Mykonos forum ... and indicate your daily hotel budget in Euros.
