Help on 1 week trip to Athens, Olympia and Santorini

Hi guys! Our friends' and our families would like to go on a 7 or 8 day trip to Greece. We will be around 10 to 12 people. The youngest in the group would be 15 years old. Athens, Olympia and Santorini are a must. Any suggestions on the best itinerary (how to divide the days). Would joining a tour group be best or should we do independent travel? I tried looking and searching for ideas, but got overwhelmed. LOL! Any suggestions for a tour group who would do just the three places, or if we do independent travel, any suggestions on the itinerary?

Thanks for any ideas.

hi and welcome..the only part i would consider doing on a tour is the trip to olympia..everything else is easily to arrange on your own..the contributors here on greek forums are very helpful..for olympia guided tour is an option especially if you don't have an experience driver in the group and i am guessing you are not familiar with greek roads anyway..in case your mind is not definitely set on olympia, consider delphi instead..take a look at this thread comparing these two sites..

the way i would go about this is this..arrive in athens, catch a corresponding flight from athens airport to santorini..it has been strongly advised here many times from people who are doing the trip from the states or canada to europe frequently that the best way to get over the jet lag is start your holidays at once in a beautiful island like santorini..getting into a vast ,hectic metropolis like athens will not help with that..

so spend your time in santorini( with only 7-8 days i'd say 2 nights- 3 days is enough) and return to athens by flying..there is the ferry option but flying is so much easier, time saving, and if you go through the two domestic air companies now ,look for flights and sign up for their newsletters (they alert you for special offers via email) you can enjoy a quick flight near the cost of a tiring, long ferry ride..with only a few days flying will save you previous time .

domestic air companies

sites for ferry schedules

when you arrive in athens head for olympia-delphi..not for a day trip, spend a night there ,visit the sites the following morning and return to athens afterwards..you will have more time to appreciate the sites..check this thread for companies who offer organized tours to delphi- olympia..

you can always do it on your own of course, with a rental car and a good gps,as long as you have a confident driver, take it easy at first untill you adjust to greek roads and let the greek drivers who run faster than they should overpass you.

once you return to athens you will have 2-3 max..the best areas to stay in athens are plaka, akropolis, monastiraki, thiseio, syntagma,in this order..avoid omonoia and its backstreets..athens like i said is hectic and it's the most effected town in greece by the crisis, but if you stick to the areas i mentioned you will like it..

athens offers you tons of options..for things to do in athens take a look at these threads..

another hidden gem in athens is anafiotika,a neighborhood near plaka built by the risidents of island anafi when they moved to athens..it is in the heart of athens but reminds you of greek islands.

keep in mind that any question you may have has been asked and answered many times before..just go to the specific forum of the area you are interested in,type the key words of your question at the research bar and previous answers to the same question will come up..for example for things to do in santorini type ''things to do'' at the research bar of santorini forum and answers will come up.

hope this helps to get you started, have fun planning!

Thank you thank you so much Athanasios! This is great and really helpful. We might just follow this itinerary! Can't wait to visit.

I forgot to add (somehow I can't seem to find the button to edit my original post) that we plan to visit the last week of August as those are the dates that would work for everyone in our group.

Thanks again. :)
