Athens and Greek Islands

We are 2 married couples who are looking to visit Athens and the Greek Islands in late September or early October. It is not that important that we swim, however, we often enjoy snorkling during our travels in warm climates. Our main focus for this trip is to visit the beautiful sites one reads about and visit the famous Greek ancient historical sites. We enjoy self-exploring/discovery, hiking, and not becoming tied to a formal touring group. Is September or October a wise time of year to travel to this region?

Hey and welcome George W:-) As far as weather, Sept it about as good as it gets.. the seas at their best after being sun-kissed all Summer long by the sun.. but there is usually a change that takes places.. often in the latter part of the month.. cloudy/rainy.. cooler nights.. that can last for a couple of days.. sometimes for a week+.. no one can predict but always emerges into a wonderful Indian Summer that extends well into October;-)

Having said that, you don't mention for how long you are going?! The mainland can easily keep you well occupied with sites.. Athens alone is good for 3 days and if into Museums, you can start tacking on the days;-) Happy planning.. Happy New Year.. and EnJOY!
