Which ferry

Planning to drive to Greece and back from the UK,probably be returning end of September. Would like to get over to Italy for the return, can anyone advise which is the cheapest route - we'll be on the Peloponnese or could drive back up to Albania or wherever,no time limits.Thanks.

The question isn't as simple as it might sound. There wouldn't be any point in taking the shortest ferry crossing (Patras-Bari) to save a few € if you spent more money on petrol and overnight stops. You also need to consider toll charges on Italian and French motorways which can add significantly to the cost. There are no toll charges in Germany so the cheapest route could be the ferry to Venice or Trieste and head north through Austria into Germany. You really need to crunch the numbers.

Matter of interest, I just booked the Patras-Trieste ferry with Minoan Lines via http://www.greekferries.gr/ who are offering an early booking discount up to the end of the month which isn't offered on Minoan's own site. If you can move quickly, you could get a bargain.

If you do travel with Minoan, get a club card when you get on board to save 10% on meals. Other operators may have similar offers.

Thanks for quick response. The purpose of our trip is to see as much as possible en route and we have several weeks in which to do it so we want to go back through Italy and France and will try to avoid toll roads where possible.

In that case, the Bari ferry would seem to be the one.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, with all the time you've got, why not drive all the way? Lots to see in the Balkans and you can still include Italy and France.
