Best stops?

The last time I was in Greece was about 25+ years ago. Only stayed in Santorini and loved it! Thinking about revisiting but of course staying a couple of weeks this time. I've done a little reading up on locations, but can't really decide what islands to narrow it down to. This will be a girls trip so not looking for romantic, quiet beaches. Looking for adventure, fun, activity, culture and of course a little night life that suits 50 somethings. Oh, and good food too! So, I was hoping for some input or suggestions about the best islands/stops to do just that. Is Santorini still as fun and beautiful? What about Mykonos? Crete? Anywhere else I might need to know about? I assume we would fly into Athens then take the ferry to whatever island. Is Athens a must see? And I realize we are only going to make 2 stops in that time period. I was just hoping to make the most of each. And lastly, I'm thinking Sept or Oct. and wondering if that time of year is their peak season? Any input would be greatly appreciated :)

hi and welcome..

greece has so much to offer it's difficult to start suggesting places..but here are some remarks from me to get you started.

september and october is not peak season for the islands, august is..by october things are ''closing down' in the islands,so if september and october are your only options,i would suggest that you arrange this trip for early september..the weather is still good, the big crowds have gone home ,but still everything is open.

now for the islands, the options are endless..santorini is still beautiful, but there are so many beautiful greek islands that i would be tempted to avoid it..but if you definitely want to include it just for a couple of days for old time's sake go for it..

greek islands are divided in island chains, here is a description of them to give you an idea..

cyclades

http://www.greeka.com/cyclades/

the typical greek islands that come to mind ,with white washed houses..very littlevegitation..santorini and mykonos is in cyclades too,so they will be familiar..it is the island chain most first time visitors choose ,and the connections are usuallly better..take a look at naxos and paros-antiparos,definitely worth you time..

sporades, the most lush and green islands..check out skopelos and alonisos, some great beaches there, and less touristy islands for sure..

http://www.greeka.com/sporades/

dodecanese

http://www.greeka.com/dodecanese/

the island chain close to turkey..like all island chains it has some tourist-developed islands like rhodes and kos and some more authentic..

ionian islands

http://www.greeka.com/ionian/

the island chain close to italy, been occupied by italy for a long time, and that shows in their architecture..corfu,zakynthos,lefkada,kefalonia..all great..

saronic islands..close to athens, suitable with a short ferry ride from athens'port pireaus..they are small,so suitable for 2-3 days, not much more..

http://www.greeka.com/saronic/

and then there is crete,a huge island, like a country, that can take all of your time..two airports to fly there, iraklio (the capital) and chania..chania and rethymno are the two most beautiful towns, but there are so many other resorts,as it's so big..

http://www.greeka.com/crete/

pick islands from the same island chain ,transfer between them via ferry is much easier..ferry schedules here (too early for some to come out,but keep checking and once they are out book directly with the ferry company of the ferry route you are interested in)

http://www.openseas.gr/openseas/index.html

http://www.gtp.gr/RoutesForm.asp

also keep in mind that you can fly from athens to the first island and from the last island to athens..so choose the flight when you can,it's much more quicker than an endless ferry ride and cheaper than you may think..if you book early enough it may be even the same price with the ferry ..here are the two domestic air companies..the earlier you book the cheaper it will be..sign up for their newsletters, they alert you for special offers via email..

http://en.aegeanair.com/

https://www.olympicair.com/en

leave athens for last for two reasons..first it is better to get over jet lag in a beautiful little island than a hectic metropolis (athens)..so if there is a corrsponding flight form athens to the first island with a suitable layover go for it..also,athens is best to be saved for last to make sure you will be close to athens airport for your flight home,so that any delays will not make you lose your flight..

in athens focus on the center where all the sites are,and everything is easily connected via train-metro or even walking.. ..take a look at plaka, akropolis, monastiraki, syntagma areas for accomodation,in that order..you can use http://www.booking.com/

to search for accomodation (use the budget filter to find a room within your budget)..Attalos and A for Athens are two hotels frequently mentioned here with good reviews,so check them out ..

things to do in athens..

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g189400-i194-k47…

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g189400-i194-k5999…

so do a bit of research and once you decide on the island chain make a list with the islands that seem appealing to you and come back here with more specific questions about them..

hope this helps,

thanos
