Greece in March

My fiance and I will be going to Greece for the last weekend in March. We will be flying in and out of Athens, and aren't sure what's worth seeing in this time of year. We would love a romantic, luxury and authentic (not touristy!) kind of vacation. In Athens, we will be staying at Hotel Grande Bretagne. Here is a tentative schedule we have, but we are also open to taking a mini trip to the islands for half of our stay....which one is nice this time of year? Heard Ios, Folegandros, Spetses, Santorini, Crete are good.

March 22- Arrive in Athens

Hike to the Acropolis, Parthenon

That night – rooftop bar for a great view of the acropolis, drink

March 23-

New Acropolis Museum

That night – Athens bar crawl - tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g189400-d1…

March 24-

Hamman baths.

March 25- 27

Day trip with Blue Water Sailing?

Day trip to Nafplio and the Peloponnese on the mainland?

Day trips to smaller Greek islands?

3 day trip to Mykonos or Santorini? Or smaller, less touristy islands?

Or -- Southern Turkey? Cyprus? Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt?

In most islands, especially the smaller ones, the season doesn't really start until the beginning of May. So most places will be closed, and the weather may not be good. Also you don't have enough time to go to any of those places really - 2 nights doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. In particular, Cyprus and Sharm are 500 and 1000 miles away respectively.

But, the idea of Nafplion is a good one if you want to see a part of Greece other than Athens. From there you can also visit many other sites - Epidaurus, Mycenae etc., and Nafplion is a lovely city in its own right.

If you want to see an island, you could try a day trip to Aegina. Not far from Athens (less than 20 miles) and good ferry links, but please don't go on the day you fly out in the evening - just in case there are problems with transport.

I'm not sure why you would want to spend a morning visiting a hammam (Turkish bath) when you are in Greece? This isn't a Greek tradition (though when the Ottomans were in occupation they built themselves many hammams, of which you can see ruins all over the country). I'm guessing there are Turkish bath/spa type establishments in New York that you could try if this appeals to you, but when you have travelled all the way across the Atlantic to Greece, wouldn't it be better to spend your time doing or seeing something Greek?

Be aware that in March the islands will be very quiet as most restaurants, bars and shops etc will be closed for the winter. You will need to base yourselves in a town with a sizeable population where life goes on year round, and where there are things you can do in bad weather. My suggestion would be to divide your time between Athens where there is a huge amount to see and do, and Nafplion which is a lovely town and an excellent base for day trips to many historic sites. March is a great time to visit the sites without summer heat and crowds.
