Suggestions for a late october holiday

Hi,My wife and I are thinking of visiting a Greek island towards the back end of october. We have never been to Greece before so would like to ask a couple of questions. Will all the resorts still be open for tourists at that time of the year? Weather towards the end of october?Suggestions of a resort for a couple that like a nice beach,Good restaurants,A good selection of bars but not the disco/karaoke type and a good bus service to visit other places near by.Any help would be much appreciated. Hi Garry

The Greek holiday season is generally early May to early October .

Things will have shut down in most of the tourist resorts when the last flight leaves , they were already closing down tavernas before we came home on the 5th of October last year from Lesvos , also the weather had turned quite cold and was raining quite a bit on our second week { needed sweaters and jackets!!! } , the public bus service stopped running when the tourists leave also .

If that is the only time you can travel take a look at Crete the most southerly of the islands so more chance of a bit of decent weather .

If you've never been to Greece before, why an island? The mainland , the Peloponnese , is still warm enough for swimming ( in late October it can rain anywhere), the coastal towns such as Nafplio , Pylos ,Koroni have resident populations all year. So no problems with accommodation or transport. At that time of the year bad weather can stop ferries for a day or two.

Have a look at the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet for southern mainland areas you might fancy.

Always have a couple of October weeks in the Southern Peloponnese myself.

if you are willing to stay in working towns rather than resorts look at rethymo town and chania town in crete..everything there will be open as they have permanent population and they also have the best chances for good weather..

they also happen to be very-very charming ..

rethymno town is the smaller of the two,so a bit more relaxed..it also has beaches nearby(haven't visited them) ,so all in all i think it would suit you better

Hi there

No where can usually offer weather guarantees but the south coast of Crete is a good bet. We've stayed in Crete right up to the final days of October several times and always had good weather. Ierapetra on the southeast coast is a working town so you'd find all you needed there whereas the resorts will be very quiet indeed.
