Athens and Islands in August

My wife and I want to take our two daughters (15,18) to Greece this summer as a graduation trip. We were thinking of Athens, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini and maybe Mykonos. We can only go in the beginning of August due to work schedules. We don't usually mind crowds, but don't like incredibly hot and humid weather. Is it crowded to the point where it is hard to get in restaurants, etc. And so hot that you can't sightsee? I was also wondering how I could find hotels that accomodate a family of four. We enjoy eating a late dinner and walking around, but aren't much into bars/nightlife.

thank you very much!

For how long are you coming ?

Any stop on an island shouldn't be less than three nights to get a little feeling of what it is like. Also note that any transfer between the islands will take the best part of one day away from your itinerary. A couple of your choices are also very far between.

August is the very top of the peak season. It will be crowded everywhere, and this is also the time of year when the temperatures are on its highest.

Crete is so big it doesn't even scratch the surface staying there for a couple of weeks. Mykonos and Santorini are the most touristy, crowded and expensive islands in Greece.

Hey and welcome kyle s:-) As far as a late dinner, most of us consider anything past 9p as late so you'll be just fine in Greece considering their average dinner time is between 10p and midnight when most tavernas/restaurants are full;-)

As far as crowds and heat, you're pretty much looking at the *peaksest* time there is with August.. up until about the 25th or so, the isles are packed.. as opposed to Athens which is pretty much a ghost town at this time since most are off themselves vacationing on the isles;-)

Your best bet once you arrive in Athens off the trans is to simply get on a flight and head out to an isle.. you'll be at the airport anyway.. no backtracking.. and huge timesaver keeping the itinerary running consecutively! You don't mention how much time you have.. you do have allot on your list.. and all the isles you mention will indeed be in full throttle as all are ports of call on cruises! Again, how much time you have will basically dictate how much you can take in.. of course, depending on your interests/prefs.. what you're looking to experience.. as well as travel style;-) Regardless, would save Athens as your finale.. you'll be about ready at this point to take on this magnificent City after having de-lagged and gotten into zone on the isles;-) Happy planning.. and EnJOY!
