Greek Islands holiday planning

Hi,

I and my husband are planning a Greek Island holiday in the beginning of September. My husband is a diver and he is interested basically of the best diving spots around the Greek Islands. On the other hand I am interested of the history and beautiful sunsets of Greece. I would like to see historical sites, beautiful villages, and gorgeous views. Could somebody advice us where to start our trip from, which islands to choose for accommodation, where we can both enjoy providing that we are planning 15 days trip and we are starting from Athens?

Every opinion will be much appreciated!

hi milena and welcome to the greek forum..here is a thread about diving in santorini

tripadvisor.co.uk/…38918966

santorini also happens to be one of the most spectacular islands, with the famous views and sunsets form the villages ''hanging'' from the cliffs..

http://tinyurl.com/kolajuw

so i think it should fit your requirements perfectly, but because of all that it is also quite expensive (although santorini experts in santorini forum can give you great advice to avoid that)... and of course it is one of the most visited greek islands,so it will be full of people even in early september.

because of that people here suggest let's say 4 full days in santorini and 10 days in nearby naxos(easily connected with a short ferry ride)..naxos is way bigger,so has more options and is waaaay cheaper than santorini..also it happens to be a great island, check this travelblog

mygreecetravelblog.com/2014/…

and this trip report with beautiful photos

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g189431-i1324-k6…

link for diving in naxos here

the default is in relevance, you can change it into date for recent options..

they way i would do this is...arrive in athens airport, catch a corresponding flight to naxos (2-2,5 hours is a good layover, not less)..air tickets here

https://www.olympicair.com/en

http://en.aegeanair.com/

the earlier you book the cheaper they will be-sign up for their newsletters ,they alert you for special offers via mail

4 full days in santorini..the 4 villages that offer the cliff views are oia,fira,firostefani,imerovigli..a description of them here..

1 - Fira. This is the islands main town and the hub of pretty much everything. it will be extremely busy pretty much all of the time, not only with everyone else staying there, but also day visitors from other parts of the island and the hordes of cruise ship visitors who are tendered ashore here. To my mind, Fira in July is a definite no no as far as staying there goes.

2 - Firostefani. This is a small village a shortish walk away from Fira, but a hell of a lot quieter. Many people who'd like to be close enough to "enjoy" Fira but who don't want to be in the centre of the madness choose to stay here.

3 - Imerovigli - This is the quietest of the caldera side villages with limited shops, restaurants etc. However, due to its higher eleveation, you get some of the best views that Santorini has to offer, including the sunsets.

4 - Oia. This is the most beautiful of the villages and where many of the photos of Santorini that you see on postcards and in books and brochues are taken. There are any hotels, bars and restaurants to suit all pockets, from the affordable by everyone to the likes of places you'd need to be a millionaire to stay at. Nightlife is fairly quiet, small bars etc, no clubs or discos.

if you rent a car, choose firostefani or imerovigli which are more quiet-firostefani has the advandage of being close to fira-,if you rely on local bus choose fira,as the buses start from there..

to find a room with caldera-cliff view go to santorini forum, state your budget for a room in euros ,your requirements and the village you are interested in..or go to http://www.booking.com/ .click on ''additional search options'' and customize your search according to your likings and budget.

things to do in santorini

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g189433-i245-k63…

after that, take the ferry to naxos..ferry schedules here

http://www.openseas.gr/openseas/index.html

(go to the ''search for a trip section at the right, choose starting point -pireaus-,destination and date)..you can buy the tickets from the ferry company's kiosk in santorini

from naxos you can fly back to athens, using the same links i gave above..hope this helps

Might be worth googling Nafplio Dive Centre, decent website, based in the delightful old Venetian fortress town , between 2 and 3 hours drive from Athens.

I've seen them operating from the town beach, and the resort of Tolo isn't far away.
