Very confused...please help

Hi All,

I am trying to figure out our Greece vacation and I am confused. I am thinking of 2 days Athens and then 11 day between 3 islands...possibly Mykonos, Santorini, and Naxos. Does this sound like too much? How many days each place and what areas on each island? Should we do it differently and include Crete? How long does it take to travel between islands and are the ferries nice (will we be able to sit outside, tan and enjoy the view or will we be sandwiched in a tight space below deck)? We have 3 teenage daughters and would like a variety of beach and excursions (ATV, boats...). Please advise as the hotels are disappearing so quickly.

Thanks,

Debbie

Hey and welcome Debbie:-) Are you still planning on going in July as you stated in your other post?;-) Bear in mind that both Santorini and Mykonos are 2 extremely popular isles (for reason) that can be costly and for the most part, take note that Santorini's beaches are more volcanic ash/grit reflecting the isle itself.. you'll find the smooth sand beaches as both Naxos and Mykonos;-)

Having said that, you can check www.gtp.gr/ www.openseas.gr/ for ferry schedules.. you'll find the various vessels and the timings (departures/arrivals) to see how long it takes.. as well as cost by doing a dummy booking;-) As far as the vessels themselves, the larger, traditional ones with outdoor space, although slower, allow for some great outdoor deck space/viewing as you sail along;-) The smaller faster Cat vessels are set up airplane seating style.. no outdoor space:-)

.. clicked wrong button...

anyways, with what looks like 2 weeks, and in order to save time and not backtrack, save Athens for your finale.. also a good call since you'll all be about ready to take on this fabulous City that involves allot of walking climbing!

Check out www.olympicair.com/ www.aegeanair.com/ and look to fly out directly to an isle upon arrival off the trans.. you can fly to either Santorini or Mykonos to start.. whichever isle best fits in with your long haul(s) arrival in Athens.. you'll be off to a great start getting you land legs back and de-lagging on a beautiful isle.. no better place to get into zone;-)

Use the ferry sites for info on travel between the isles.. you can fly (or ferry) back to Athens for your finale there before heading home;-) And as far as Naxos, it would certainly make for a great contrast.. up to you how to split up the time.. your prefs/interest, as well as travel style rules;-) If you want a more laid back.. 'get to know the place better' experience, stick with 2 isles.. if you don't mind moving every 3-4 days, then go ahead and add Naxos;-) Happy planning.. and EnJOY!

Traditional ferry (Blue Star)

Naxos

mygreecetravelblog.com/2014/…

Be aware that even if distances between islands don't look far every time you get up and move the best part of one day will be gone from your itinerary (you shall pack\unpack, check out and in of hotels, transport to and from ports, some waiting time in ports, time for embarking\disembarking and the actual time used for the journey).

From Naxos you can do day excursions to the surrounding islands like Mykonos, Delos, Santorini and the Small Cyclades. It is also possible to do a day trip to Paros using ordinary ferries.

Leave Crete for other vacation. Naxos and Mykonos have much better beaches than Santorini, and Naxos has the best position for daily excursions. As Litsa said, Mykonos and Santorini have higher prices. If you want to see all three islands, you could split the time as follows, 3 days Mykonos, 5 days Naxos, 3 days Santorini or you could visit and Mykonos and some other islands from Naxos, as greek-traveller already said, with a less effort.
