6.5R earthquake in Lemnos. 3 injured. 120 in Turkey.

An earthquake of 6.5R magnitude took place 20 - 25 minutes ago off coast the Northeastern part of Lemnos island in Greece, in the Northeastern Aegean.

Situation is still evaluated.

Up to now, 3 reported lightly injured people in Lemnos - Greece and unfortunately appx. 100 - 120 people in Istanbul and Canakkale in Turkey from the exact same tremor (!).

The quake was felt in the whole Eastern Mediterannean, from Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, all the way to Jordan and Israel.

It is quite astonishing how the quake did not cause casualties in the island it took place, while it caused injuries in neighboring countries.

Situation is still evaluated, i guess more news for any damage or injuries will start rolling. Still, it seems things are going quite well and under control, at least in Greece.

Some aftershocks of substantial magnitude are definitely expected. Again: situation still evaluated, but it seems no substantial damage took place on the island directly affected.

We did not feel anything here in Athens *at all*.

You can see how this evolves almost live, here: http://www.earthquakenet.gr/

More information:

No substantial problems up to now at all.

1 person was lightly injured in Lemnos airport. The incident received proper care in the small airport medical unit and is not considered something substantial up to now.

2 other people in Lemnos were injured by falling objects in a house in Lemnos.

Three uninhabited old farmhouses have fallen down in Lemnos and one village chapel in Lesvos island.

No other injuries are reportedup to now.

Power supply was interrupted for 3 - 4 minutes for safety reasons and came back after that short interval.

-----------------

I am still trying to understand how the injuries took place in Turkey, some hundred miles away. It seems it may have to do with two possible reasons.

1. Different building code rules or different level of compliance to these rules between the two countries and

2. Panic in the case of Turkey. I assume the injuries took place during the earthquake by falling objects or people not seeking proper coverage during it, or people trying to find an immediate exit. This is unfortunately a very common case of ijuries, when people are trying to go out of a building and getting injured not from actual building damage but either because of panic and fast evacuation or falling objects like frames or other light objects.

One way or another, this is another proof of how natural phaenomena are not specific country related but affect different countries not taking of course under notice man made lines, like border.

Two more videos from our neigboring country, Turkey, here:

and here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC3VILTwQSU

Typical case of rather strong quake with noise coming first and then seismic waves following some seconds after.

Again: No substnaital damage reported in both countries. Some very light injuries in Greece, definitely more injuries in Turkey, not necessarilly from actual damage but from panic.

Wow, 6.5 . Glad no body was killed...

Thanks for the updates Nick.

Just had a google, apparently it was felt in Sofia also, the fact that you didn't feel it in Athens is incredible...

It must have to do with what part of Earth moved. I guess waves of Earth's crust moved towards the West, deep in the sea of Marmara, where Istanbul is.

As it seems from the videos, sound of the earthquake reached the area 3 - 4, maybe 6 seconds before the actual waves of energy, so we are probably talking about an effect in a distance of some hundred miles indeed, all the way to Asia Minor.

Things are definitely calm here, business as usual in Athens, a normal Saturday afternoon. It also seems pretty calm up there at least for Lemnos and surrounding islands. As it seems from the photos some buildings have been cordonned off just to keep people from going in. We are talking about older, not used buildings.

Again: no other injuries in the immediate area, except the initial light 3; for an island of 20,000 people it's a pretty good outcome.

Greek authorities have been quite succesful last years on handling these things. You can't do many things when you go through such a hit. All you can do is to prepare during previous decades ( build stronger buildings wich seems to be the case for Greece: repetitively, buildings go through these quakes with no substantial damages ) and then, after the hit, react fast and correctly. Greek authorities seem to have reacted very very fast this time since it seems some teams are already out less than 2 - 3 hours from the quake to inspect buildings.

We still have no more information, especially from Thasos, Samothrace, these re the Greek islands on the direction that the quake seems to have caused the biggest tremor, still things are evolving very very good for a 6.5R one.

In http://www.earthquakenet.gr/ again you can see all the quakes taking place in the area. We already have a dozen of smaller quakes on a line running from East to West. All these green and red dots are less or around 3R. The more we see them, the better the things go.

The more small quakes we get, the quicker the energy inthe area will be released, so, again, more quakes it is actually a good thing. I hope / assume this map will get filled with dozens of red and green dots in the following days in the specific area.

These smaller quakes are usually not felt anyway.

Things seem to be going pretty well.

Nick, it was felt in Athens, but not at ground level. Us on the 6th floor swayed for a long time, the longest I've felt an earthquake! We were banned from using the elevators for a while :(

The guys on the ground & 1st floor didn't know what we were talking about when we mentioned it!

My parents live on the west coast of Limnos and my mother said it was very loud and very frightening to see everything shaking. But luckily no damage outside or inside the house. However friends who live north-east on the island had pictures fall off the walls and kitchen items fall out of cupboards.

9. Re: 6.5R earthquake in Lemnos. 3 injured. 120 in Turkey.

:-) Indeed :-)

Everything went quite well in the end.

Greeks on the island reacted quite calmly, despite the quake's intensity. No other injuries were reported, so number stopped on 3 and these were light injuries. 15 - 20 buildings were severly affected, reaction was pretty fast from everyone, all in all a very good situation despite the intensity of the phaenomenon.

Unfortunately list of injuries in Turkey went up to 267 persons ( ! ), 4 of them seriously injured. Most of the injuries took place during the quake when people were going out of their houses. Another proof that panic is during an earthquake can cause damage too.

And of course the grandma is uber - super cool :-)
