Where next?

We spent almost two weeks in Greece in 2006, divided up between Athens (2 nights), Mykonos (3 nights), Santorini (3 nights), Rhodes (3 nights) and back to Athens (1 night).

We're thinking of a return trip in 2016 (our 30th wedding anniversary), and wonder where to go...

The three Islands + Athens worked for us in 2006, though it did seem we were on the move a lot. Maybe this time, 2 islands plus Athens (since we'd be flying in and out of Athens).

We're not just 'lay on the beach/by the pool and relax' people (though some of that is fine); we kind of like some action/nightlife as well.

hi,naxos and paros is an option..i have only been in paros ,but people here descriibe naxos as cheap, relaxed, and with a rental car you have many options for exploring the inner mountainous villages (like apeiranthos, the ''marble village'' )

more info here.

mygreecetravelblog.com/2014/…

people here often recommend staying in a hotel in st.george beach, which is 5-10 minutes' walk from naxos town, where you can walk to at the evenings-nights for entertainment.

beautiful photos in this trip report here

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g189431-i1324-k6…

paros is one of my favourites ( i am around 30 ) with an age range and good options for nightlige..both islands have beautiful beaches..in paros kolympithres beach is famous for its rock formation but it's tiny,so not enough personal space, not enjoyable for me..golden beach is great and pounta is where the younger people usually are (of course everyone goes there but you know what i mean) ,with a beach bar that gets full in high season with misic etc...other good beaches too...two major areas in paros..paroikia,the port and main hub, with a lot of action for nightlife..and naousa,a charming fishing village that now caters for tourists ..

i stay outside paroikia, use the car to get to the beaches and to get to the bars-clubs of paroikia at night..a car is a must for me as,it gives you so much flexibility..

imagine naxos as a bit more relaxed and paros as a bit more upbeat, especially around paroikia

you can google the places i mentioned in you tube, videos are the best way to learn a new place..

another option would be crete, which is huge and a whole different topic.

an important question is when exactly are you going?a place that may be lively in august may be empty in may-early june,so timing is important.

you can fly from athens to the first island and from the second island to athens..you only have to use the ferry between the islands..

tickets from the 2 local airways here (they are now merging and by 2016 only aegean will be present)

schedules for ferrys (too soon of course ,but pinpoint them ) here

2. Re: Where next?

We would be traveling in mid to late June.

Thanks for all of the info!

My only question (so far) is, when you said, "another option would be crete, which is huge and a whole different topic.", why is that? Is it not a good option?

Thanks again!

of course it's an option,it's a great island..i said it's another topic because it is so big ( its size can't be compared with the other islands) and has so much to offer that people can write on and on about it..i hope the more knowledgable for crete jump in..

i loved chania and rethymno towns..notice that they are real working towns, with a big permanent population (chania 55.000,rethymno 28.000)...,but both very charming,in fact two of the most charming towns in greece ..photos here..(again,google them in you tube for videos)

chania town

rethymno town

they are similar, they have the same feeling (rethymno a smaller version of chania),with their venetian harbours,.they definitely have the buzz you are looking for..chania has its own airport,so you can fly to there from athens -ferrys take endless hours-.. the other airport in crete is in the captal, iraklio, which is 90 minutes away from rethymno..you can google a map of crete to see the main areas
