Cable car to Mount Parnitha

I'm visiting Athens at the end of May and while I'm there, I would like to do some hiking in Mount Parnitha National Park. As I understand, there's a cable car that leads to Regency Casino which seems to be a good starting point for hiking. However I wasn't able to find much information about the cable car. Can it be used by hikers or is it only for guests of the casino? How much is it? I read somewhere that the cable car is free of charge but then I read somewhere else that you need to pay 6€ as en entrance fee to the casino. Could I pay 6€ to be able to use the cable car and then just not visit the casino?

Hi Tommy

Fellow hiker here. Since you mentioned it, a couple of questions: Are you hiking solo? Do have any previous knowledge of Parnitha terrain? There's a dense network of trails that covers the whole mountain range and you need to be somehow experienced and familiarized, as it's not uncommon to get lost in the woods even with gps and most hikers prefer to join organized teams. Let me know if you need any suggestions.

Hi,

There is or used to be a bus service from near Omonia Square on a Sunday up to Parnitha. If you can get hold of an Anavasi map of the area it will help. The paths are well marked and it is difficult to get lost.

>>it is difficult to get lost<<

No it's not. It depends on the trail difficulty -a couple of wrong turns and you're lost. And when the sun sets you will lose orientation and then you'll have to be rescued -putting others in danger as well. Do not take risks.

Hi,

Of course it is more difficult to get lost in the dark. Anyway, during the years I lived in Piraeus I hiked Parnitha many times and never managed to lose myself. Again, unless you stray off the main paths it is difficult to get lost.

Thanks everyone for taking your time to answer! I'm glad I'll be able to use the cable car to get up there.

I'll be hiking with my partner and we'll have a trail map downloaded in my phone, plus we hike quite frequently, in other countries and national parks as well so I'm not worried :)
