AIRPORT METRO: Last minute info / July 1st

As announced today, the delayed cease of operation on Athens airport metro connection, will take place at July 1st till Dec 31st.

For those who already know the issue:

Let's see it reverse. Airport metro will for sure be running until June 30th :)

For those who read this for first time:

Athens metro offers three lines. Blue, Red, Green.

A part of Blue line is also serving directly the Airport with trains that do the downtown connection from early am till midnight, every 30 minutes, with a 39 minutes trip duration.

A cease of operation of this specific part of Blue line, that has been announced from the middle of 2007 would take place for a limited 6 months, starting from March 1st. These cease of operation would take place in order to add new stations on this path, affecting only the specific part of Blue line.

Despite the announcements, the cease was delayed for some weeks, due to ancient remnants found on spot during initial digging works.

No info was available for when or of the cease would take place.

Today, Athens Metro service announced that this will be done on July 1st for a 6 months period.

All other lines ( including downtown part of Blue line ) will be working correctly.

Additional connections with the center of the city, to / from the Airport can also be done by multiple ways, including:

- the X95, X96 Airport express buses,

- the Suburban railway or

- taxis.

So:

All visitors that want to use the Blue line ( airport metro connection ) till June 30th will be able to do it without any worries :)

All visitors that want to use this connection from July 1st and on, will most probably have to use other means of transportation. This change will add only around 10 - 20 minutes on their trip time, relatively to the direct metro connection.

When the cease of operation takes effect, the trains will terminate at Ethniki Amyna station. From there one can take either the X95 or X96 airport buses to continue to the airport.

Actually this is how things were, back when the connection to the airport was not completed yet.

So this cease of operation is for us a trip back to a less convenient time...

. . . unfortunately yes. . .

If they had managed to build these stations back in 2003, this would not be necessary at all. . .still two brand new stations will get in the metro system, less cars will reach Athens roads, so patience will be rewarding, after all :)

Just a quick question..doesn't the X96 bus go to Piraues from airport? Thought the ONLY bus route to Athens Central from airport was X95?! Thanks..Enjoy!

Efharisto, Nick. I'm so happy the airport metro will be running during my trip in May. If people tend to shoot the messenger delivering bad news, and the opposite holds true for good news, there must be a lot of people who'd like to give you a big hug right now.

Yes, X95 is the one going downtown. X96 goes to Piraeus via the Coastal route.

When metro connection to the airport ceases, X96 will be a good alternative for those going to the Piraeus seaport.

-----------------------------------------------------

Airport bus lines:

X92: Airport - Kifissia

X93: Airport - Lision Bus Terminal - Kifisos Bus Terminal

X94: Airport - Ethniki Amyna

X95: Airport - Syndagma

X96: Airport - Piraeus seaport

X97: Airport - Dafni metro station

Detailed map here:

http://62.103.163.50/UserFiles/File/travelers/access_parking/access_maps_2007/162349_attica_access_transport_big.jpg

So, daytime downtown is actually served by 2 bus lines:

X95, direct to downtown

X94, till Ethniki Amyna and then hopping in metro system to get downtown.

X94 actually can be better at rush hour.

----------------------------------------------------

DAYTIME CONNECTIONS AND METRO UNAVAILABLE?

These are some sample routes from early am to late pm

A. Airport to Syndagma:

Two ways exist:

- X95 bus from Airport to Syndagma. Direct. Price 3.20€ p.p. Duration 60 - 65 minutes.

- X96 bus from Airport to Ethniki Amyna. Hop there, same ticket in Blue subway line, direction "Egaleo". 1 change, non direct but faster during rush hour. Price 3.20€ p.p. Duration 55 - 60 minutes.

B. Airport to Omonoia

Many ways exist. Fastest is:

- Fastest way: Hop on Suburban train. Hop off at Neratziotissa stop. Change there, same ticket, to Green metro line ( direction Piraeus ). Hop off at Omonoia stop. Non direct. Price 6€. Duration around 60 minutes. Actual ride around 45 minutes.

C. Airport to Bus Terminals ( Kifisos, Liosion )

X93 bus is the simplest way to do it. May get engaged in traffic. Price 3,20€ p.p. Duration 50 - 70 minutes, depending the traffic.

D. Airport to Piraeus

Two ways exist during daytime:

- X96 bus. Direct. Price 3,20€ p.p. Trip duration around 70 minutes. May get engaged in traffic during weekdays mornings and Sunday afternoon, doing it at 90 minutes.

- Suburban + Green metro line. Hop on Suburban train. Hop off at Neratziotissa stop. Change there, same ticket, to Green metro line ( direction Piraeus ). Hop off at the end. Non direct. Price 6€. Duration around 80 minutes. Actual ride around 65 minutes.
