Renting a Car to leave Athens on Oct 5th.

Hi,

We are going to be leaving Athens for a few days in the Peloponnese by way of rental car. However, we are unsure where to rent a car from. Our hotel is a few blocks from the Akropoli station on the red line. There is a Hertz just a few blocks from our hotel. But that would mean having to drive out of Athens. My other option is to take the Metro out to the airport to rent a car out there. What do you guys think? Adding to the conundrum is we want to do this on Monday, the 5th of October, the day after the elections.

Ideally, we would want to leave as early as possible in the AM. I've also considered renting the car the night before and parking it at the hotel. Then leaving around 7AM Monday morning. Does anyone have any advise?

My advice is: read this thread: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g189400-i194-k3082…

7 AM is already too late if your aim is to avoid the early morning rush hour.

Your chances of renting a car the night before on Oct 4th in Athens might be slim since its elections Sunday.Check with providers. You could rent one at the airport,on that day for sure, but if this is the case you might as well go there on the morning of the 5th.

I have rented from Hertz on Syngrou ave many times, and the drive from there to out of Athens is a piece of cake......alas you need to leave Athens early in the morning ,like at 5:30 at the latest.Traffic is pretty bad during the day.

Come to think of it Budget and Avis are located on the same street as Hertz just up the road towards Syndagma across from Hadrian's Gate. You might want to contact them also about Sunday. To tell you the truth unless I had to stay in Athens the night of the 4th ,I would just drive out that evening/early afternoon.I would spent Sunday night in Corinthos or Nauplion, depending on destination.I guaranty you, there will not be any traffic out of Athens Sunday afternoon.

Hello Palledorous,

Last week I took the Athens-Corinth route at 08.00 am, departure from central Athens where I live. I was surprised that there was hardly any traffic, even though the Athenians have returned...

In the past 6 mths I've made 6-7 trips, I usually leave around 6.30 am, but I never manage to exactly,so it's always around 7.00. It's amazing how this little time, makes the world of difference.

Know that 6-8 am is peak traffic time for Leoforos Athinon, the exit for Corinth from Athens for semi trailers {which cause all the delays}.

On the other hand, you could take the metro, and in one hour with connection at Syndagma, you'll be at the airport. Take the car, and then Attiki Odos, which alas, has quite a substantial amount of traffic ALSO, understandably so, it's a popular choice, although there aren't any traffic light delays.

If I had to choose, I would scout the rental car companies {which give a hotel delivery for the car for the best rate/deal}, and ask for a supplement service of an escort out of Athens. It's done, the rental car company can assist you to the major "artery" of exit, and depart early on 05.10.

Don't attempt any form of movement on national highways on 04.10..

On 05.10, although this will be a peak travelling day, the general direction of movement will be to Athens,, rather than away from it, as 70% of the Athenians are registered in rural counties rather than the "megapolis"

We rented from Budget on Syngrou and left for Delphi. Piece of cake, no need to go to the airport.

We rented from the airport when we came in and went to Napflio. very easy.

Directions back to Syngrou seem simple but they aren't. I had a nightmare experience, driving across Athens at 9:15 Monday morning.Through Omonia and Syndgma, fighting with hundreds of scooters. No parking by Budget and nothing is marked well, small signs. Just pull up on the sidewalk. Don't pass it, you cant do a U-turn due to the median barrier.

I'd do it again.

Real bad directions!! It's not just a drive, it's an adventure. I made it though and it's a great story to tell. People who have been to Athens are horrified when I show them the route we drove.
