Train from Thessaloniki to Athens--any recent reviews?

I am thinking of taking this train wtih my family during our summer holiday in northern Greece as a means of returning to Athens. The train that runs from Athens to Thessaloniki to Istanbul is called the "Friendship Express" except we would be taking it in reverse. If anyone has travelled on this or similar trains in Greece recently I would appreciate hearing any feedback on what they are like (we would presumably be in a sleeper car) and whether it is a good choice for family travel.

Hi jklNy :)

You can see daily departures here http://www.trainose.com/content/wizards

You 'll have to fill in "The" for Thessaloniki and "Ath" for Athens.

As you can see, it's about 8 to 10 departures per day and not all have the same trip duration. So, a variation of trains run on this track.

Faster train is the "Intercity" ( marked IC ) and among them, usually fastest is the "Intercity Express" ( marked ICE or IE ).

I usually prefer the fastest train, either Intercity or Intercity Express. These trains are faster, newer, cleaner. These are running thorugh the day and it is a good way to cross a big portion of central Greece and enjoy the changing views. So, even if a day train is seeming as time-munching, is part of the experience. I usually try to get the best class available, since seating is better with more leg space.

On the other, hand, you can see that 3 trains are available running at night, getting you at Athens at early morning. Travelling with a night train you miss the views but you also save on a night's hotel. Night trains are so and so, ok for a night, but i would not cross Europe on them, in terms of luxury or comfort :)

You can find a lot of according info and photos here: virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Greece/Pref…

You can also find info scrolling down in the "London - Athens on train all the way" part here: http://www.seat61.com/Greece.htm

Keep in mind that most travellers prefer the ICE. It's, as i posted before faster, newer with a/c, in general a better option.

These are part of the "Friendship Express" which actually a two -parts trip, one from Istanbul to Thessaloniki and another one ( this commented ) from Thessaloniki to Athens.
