Athens Review

We have just returned from a great time in Athens.

We spent two nights in Athens - and utilized tripadvisor extensively before - so thought we owed it to everyone to give a brief follow-up.

We had booked our following cruise and transportation through Atlantis Travel - which was great to deal with. The driver at the airport was there no problem on arrival with a sign - but the taxi queue was nothing too bad.

We stayed at the Ava hotel based on the numerous great reviews on here.

Our first day we walked to the Panathenaic stadium (actually on accident) and were very happy to do the audio guide tour there. Actually surprised by how few tourists were there.

We then walked to Syntagama Square to see the changing of the guard. There is lots of spray paint on buildings throughout the city - Too bad that cannot somehow be controlled.

Walked through the pedestrian street by the mcdonalds and through the Plaka. All very nice and full of cheesy shops.

Went through the Akropolis Museum which was very beautiful and full of great artifacts. The outdoor restaurant on the museum's terrace is also very nice and very reasonably priced!

We ate dinner at a restaurant - Strofi near the Acropolis museum. It is a definite recommend - great menu, reasonable prices and unbeatable view.

The next day - we got up early to see the Acropolis. The hike up was suprisingly short (based on reviews we thought it would be harder!). We arrived at 9am and it was FULL of tourists. It is definitely nice and good to see - but we then visited the Ancient Agora which we preferred and did the Rick Steves walking tour which was great.

We ate lunch at the souvlaki alley - which was great for people watching!

We stopped off at bretto's in the plaka for some great ouzo and friendly conversations with the owner before making our way to daphne's near the Ava hotel for dinner. Food was great there as well - but a tad more expensive then Strofi's.

Service was great throughout Athens. All the people we encountered were very friendly. The food was unbelievably good - and plentiful!!!

We did take a cruise after through Louis Cruises and will try and post a review on here as well on that - since info on this seem to be somewhat limited!

Thanks again to all for the help in planning our trip!

Great trip :) Grreat memories :)

Agora is indeed a fantastic site and can easily be visited after the Acropolis site.

Graffiti is indeed heavy but, actually, it's a bit less than 1 - 2 years ago. Authorities are actively promoting a graffiti programme on huge surfaces like side walls of buildings, in order to get rid of the "inscriptions" and get more artistic results.

We already have some very encouraging results at Psirri area, like this:

Graffiti in Athens is not in generally characterizing a shady area or a run down area. You can see graffiti in the most posh areas sometimes. Chanelling all this to a different action, by offering sides of the buildings as a canvas, it is projected that in 10 - 12 years, we may be able to have a inscriptions-free downtown, full of huge street paintings instead. Not that bad :)

We too just came back from Athens. Rick steeve's audio tours are sick!!!! It was like being with a private guide. He orients you nicely and gives you great information about each site. We did the acropolis, the ancient agora, and the city walk from syntagma square through ermou street and it was very informative. It still helps to have a map handy as a supplement.
