I would definately recommend seeking out Anifiotika the Greek "Island" on the north side of the Acropolis. It is certainly off-the-beaten track and you may need to ask for directions to it. Once you find it you will never believe you are in a city of millions but on a Greek Island in the Cyclades with the narrow lanes, white-washed houses, blue roofs and nice views of Athens. Another area to check out is the Meat, Fish & Produce Markets off Athinas St. where most locals go to shop, but few tourists venture.

Anafiotika is easy to find. Just head uphill towards the Acropolis from almost any street in Plaka, and when you're in the midst of narrow lanes and whitewashed houses, you're there. Keep going up - the lanes get narrower and the houses prettier, and the views better and better.

You could venture out to Acharnes or Thrakomakedones, just below Parnitha mountain. Both places are far removed from the hustle and bustle of Athens.

If by any chance you are in Athens this Friday there is a free bike ride covering all the suburbs of Athens. It covers 100+ km distance and starts at 22.00 at the 27th of July until 10.00 the next day.Of course you can cover as much as you want but you have to have experience with long bike rides. It starts from Thissio train station. This is an one off event for the amount of distance covered, otherwise it covers 40 to 60 kms

If you google "Rick Steves Athens City Walk", you can download a podcast and map of a walking tour of Athens. I used it a few months back on my first trip to Athens, and it was good. It also takes you to Anifiotika, which as the previous posters have mentioned, is a real hidden treasure. If you enjoy walking, walk up to the top of Mt. Lycabettus (Likavitos), it is a great walk up, and the views are amazing. Also, the walk up to the Monument of Philopappos Hill is lovely, you get amazing views of the Acropolis. I also enjoyed going to the Athens Market on Athinas Street, great atmosphere.
