How long to disembark, etc.?

We will be arriving in Piraeus on a Blue Star overnight ferry from Rhodes on a Sunday morning at 6:45. Our flight back home leaves Athens at 1:05 p.m.

I am figuring this should work out just fine, but was looking for confirmation. How long does it typically take to disembark from a large ferry? We'd like to take the bus directly to the airport. I would imagine that lots of ferry passengers plan to do the same thing. Is there more than one bus available? Don't want to be nervous on the day of departure.

Will possibly fly back to Athens the night before, but imagine that the Blue Star should not get cancelled. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey and welcome SenioritaSuziCapeCod:-) Disembarkation takes no time.. basically an organized mob scene when the ferry pulls in and anchors.. it's just a simple walk off the vessel! If all goes timely, you should have no problem with that afternoon departure;-)

Having said that.. in case of untimely/delayed arrival.. or even a cancelled ferry.. do you have a plan 'B' just in case?;-) Maybe flying in the night before would be a good call to ensure getting on that long haul trans back home, after all?;-) Happy planning.. and EnjoY!

Hi,

As you have such a reasonable buffer time it makes sense just to hang back a little while on the disembarkation and just stroll off in relative peace. Just let the people who queue to get off first do just that, play it cool. You should still be off in maybe 20 min or so.

Those buses are always packed in the usual Greek fashion, never taken one that has not been like that.

Actually not that many people will be going to the Airport, more likely Athens and elsewhere, they will be mostly Greeks.

Where that ferry docks ~Gate E1 is one of the first stops going around the harbour so you are in the best position, may even get a seat....

Thanks Litsa and Retired Hippy for your advice. Glad the disembarkation process won't take forever and that the ferry docks in a good location. If the bus to the airport were full, we could always take the train, I suppose.

Hopefully the ferry plan will work. Will check on flights for the night before, to develop a Plan B. Thanks again.

You're welcome:-) For flights, take a look at both www.olympicair.com/ www.aegeanair.com/ Although Blue Star is a great ferry and like most ferries run on schedule.. one never knows! Gazillion folks do what you're doing off cruises/ferries successfully.. only takes one bad day to cause some folks allot of distress and anx;-) You don't mention 'when' you're going.. nonetheless, having a back-up plan is a must IMO in this situation.. considering you're coming the distance and a miss would more than likely be disruptive to say the least! Keep us posted.. keep enjoyin'!

The day is Sunday, so should be comparatively quiet at that time of the day.

Thanks. Good point!

In inquiring about travel insurance in the event the Blue Star canceled due to weather or mechanical failure, my insurance agent said that you'd be covered IF you were able to secure official documentation from Blue Star regarding why it canceled. Imagine that might not be that easy to obtain. Anyone had any experience with this?

(Keeping my fingers crossed for cheap flights! LOL)
