Day Trip from Athens

I will be in Athens for 2.5 days beginning next Saturday (and then I will be on Crete for 4 days, and then Rome for 3.5 days). I am considering taking a day trip from Athens but am wondering if that makes sense given my limited time. The Island Cruise has mixed reviews and the trip to Nafplio looks great. I'd love to both see a historical site outside Athens and relax on the beach, but the drive seems less exciting. That all being said, is a day trip worth it, giving me just a day and a half in Athens to see the historical sites?

Loutraki town is not too far, regular busses go there. A nice small seaside town, with tavernas, casino if you like, swimming etc.

I too would concentrate on Athens with your limited timespan. There are so many and varied fascinating sights and museums to see in the city. However,if you do find yourself having a bit of a culture overload, there are pleny of pretty decent beaches available by taking a tram from Syntagma wth Asklepsia Voula on the front.Journey time is between 45 minutes to an hour.

A day and a half in Athens will only allow you to visit some major museums and the Acropolis. That said, and bearing in mind that you'll find better beaches in Crete, I can only see the point of doing a day trip to visit an ancient of otherwise interesting site outside the city. Both Delphi and Nafplio are great destinations, but I'd say you'll spend more time driving to and from both (wouldn't even consider taking a KTEL bus, too much hussle for a 1-day return trip) than enjoying them proper. I'd more easily suggest either Cape Sounion (the ride, the views and the site are very worthwhile, plus you'll pass by a number of beaches should you get a craving for a swim) or going to one of the northern Athenian suburbs such as Penteli to visit the medieval monastery there and have lunch in one of the numerous tavernas.

Stay in Athens for the entire time . . . lots to see and you don't want to have to rush around and not get a feel of Athens.
