Greece- first week of April

Hi

we have two kids aged 14 and 8 and we would like to visit Greece first week of April with them. Is it enough time to visit Athens and one other island (if so what would be a good choice). If we decide not to go in April we could go for a little over two weeks in August; but heard August can be very hot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey and welcome BV52:-) Well, early April can be a bit 'iffy'.. you can get nice, warm, sunny weather.. then again, it can be cool/rainy.. pretty unpredictable;-) Having said that, your best bet would be to head South.. Rhodes would most likely fit the bill for a nice stay of about 4-5 days.. lots to fill in your time on this isle.. way to go would be a rental.. from the Old Town to Lindos.. lots to explore and keep you occupied;-)

You're coming a long way.. best to just grab a flight from Athens.. you'll be arriving there anyway..and no time wasted backtracking.. get a flight straight out upon arrival..isle flights don't take nore than about 50 min or so.. keep an eye out and sign up for email alerts now with both www.olympicair.com/ www.aegeanair.com/ The latter offers some great deals throughout the year;-) You can fly back and spend the finale of 2-3 days in Athens.. also ensures that return flight home;-)

If you opt for a couple of weeks+ in August, all the better.. but do be aware that August is pretty much busting at the seams.. it's the peak of peak season along with the heat.. especially the middle of the month! If you can arrange for the 2-weeker to begin after say about the 23-24th, thereabouts, blending into early Sept.. all the better;-) Happy planning.. and enJOY!

A week is a very short time to come all the way from the west coast, but April can be a beautiful month in Greece, and I think you'd probably be able to pack in as much sightseeing as you could in two weeks in August, when it can be too hot to move around except in the morning and evening.

So if it's a sightseeing holiday you want, I'd go for April; for sun-and-sand holiday (which your eight-year-old might prefer) then consider August. If you decide on April, and want to combine Athens with an island, Rhodes, as Litsa suggests, would be a good choice. On the other hand, there is so much to be seen and enjoyed in Athens, that you might think about basing yourself there - the hills of Athens will be full of spring flowers! - and doing a day trip to a nearby island: Aegina, for example.

Would recommend April, as August is THE holiday month for Greeks, ferries and hotel and restaurants all full, everybody on move, also 15 August and around that date should be avoided.

April can be a nice month, winter is over definitely, and the nature is waking up.

Happy holidays!

thanks so much guys for such a prompt response. I am tied to the kids school schedule and hence the rushed week in April. I am presuming if August is that hot and crowded; so is July; isn't it?

Our pleasure BV52:-) And yeah.. pretty much.. as hot..maybe not AS packed but again, July/August are the main months for tourists/visitors traveling to the Country;-) If you can swing June.. even late June into early July.. that would be a bit better crowd-wise.. but the heat is pretty much a given;-) Keep us posted.. keep enJOYin'!
