Need advice on Planning a 10 day Trip to Greece and Turkey

Hi,

We family of 4 ( 2 kids- 5 & 13 yrs) are planning a 10 day trip (during first week of Aug ) from US to visit Greece for 3 days and 5 days in Istanbul, 2 days of to & from travel from Philadelphia.

Following is what we the places we would like to see-

Greece- Athens and Santorini

Istanbul- Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Old Bazzar, Cruise of Bosphorus, Pamukkale, Ephesus and Troy;

Looking for recommendation to plan our trip.

Is it doable in 8 days?

The Greece leg of your trip sounds crazy. What you will be able to see in Athens and Santorini will depend on your precise travel arrangements. There are daily ferries (www.gtp.gr ) and flights from Athens to Santorini as well as flights Athens-Istanbul and Santorini-Istanbul (Atlas Jet). Only you can decide what best suits your plans.

No its not doable in 8 days.

With only 3 days in Greece you can either see Athens or Santorini.

5 days is a good (more or less) amount of time for the city of Istanbul, but you also include Ephesus, Troy and Pamukkale which are towns far away from each other and from Istanbul.

We spent 5 days in Istanbul with our 20 yr olds and saw a good overview of this wonderful city. They were older than your kids and jet lag hit us all especially coming from the states. Plus it was humid and hot in all of the historical sights. I would spend all 8 days in Turkey and save Greece for another trip. Loved our hotel in Istanbul, the best western president walking distance to all the sights.

Thank you all for the input. May be I should consider only with Istanbul.

Do I need a local guide or is it easy to go around using taxi.?

Istanbul is easy to get around; most of the major sites are within walking distance of one another. But I'd suggest a guide - 4 of us hired a guide for two days and it was well worth it.

Hey and welcome krisPhilly:-) I think you've made a wise choice sticking to one Country considering you've got the 10 days! Friends of mind just returned from practically a 3-week vaca in Turkey with about 17-18 days on land not counting travel days to/from the States and managed to take in everything on your wish list for Turkey along with Cappadochia and a short stay at a beach on the Southern end of the coast.. and found it wasn't enough time.. traveling via internal flights, local buses and car rental;-)

If you are willing to just take in the Capitals and bypass any excursions, you may be able to fly into Athens for 3 days.. fly to Santorini for 3 days.. fly to Istanbul for 4 on an open jaw tickets! But regardless, do bear in mind that it will be HOT! Not much shade at the outdoor historical sites.. and no matter where you fly to first, you'll be dealing with some major lag considering the flight alone from NYC at least on a direct takes about 9-10 hours.. add to that the 7 hour time difference.. so you'll be arriving in a major metropolis with rubber legs and head buzz.. not a good time to be trapsing in the heat to check out the Akropolis IMO.. especially with 2 little ones along;-)

I realize coming the distance .. on possibly a once in a lifetime trip.. most try to get in as much as possible.. sacrificing quality for quantity.. personal call of course.. your prefs/interests and travel style rule.. but think you made a good call here;-) Hopefully, you'll return to Europe and get to give Greece the time it deserves in the near future;-) Best.. and enJOY!
